Young Sherlock is an upcoming streaming television series set to release on Prime Video. The series is an adaptation of Andrew Lane’s Young Sherlock Holmes book series, itself a pastiche of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original Sherlock Holmes stories. The series will be directed by Guy Ritchie and will star Hero Fiennes Tiffin as Holmes.
Premise
[edit]As a 19-year-old at Oxford University, Sherlock Holmes is not yet the master detective he grows up to be. He is raw and unfiltered, and he lacks discipline. A murder at Oxford puts Holmes's freedom at risk, and he sets out to solve his first murder mystery that leads him to a global-level conspiracy.[1]
Cast
[edit]- Hero Fiennes Tiffin as Sherlock Holmes, an unruly 19 year old amateur investigator.
- Zine Tseng as Princess Gulun Shou’an, a young Chinese princess, scholar and martial artist.
- Joseph Fiennes as Silas Holmes, Sherlock's adventurous father.
- Natasha McElhone as Cordelia Holmes, Sherlock's artistic mother.
- Dónal Finn as James Moriarty
- Colin Firth as Sir Bucephalus Hodge
Production
[edit]The series was first reported by the tabloid newspaper The Mirror in April 2024,[2] before being officially confirmed in May.[3]
The series will be written and showrun by Matthew Parkhill, and directed by Guy Ritchie, who had previously helmed two unrelated cinematic Holmes adaptations: Sherlock Holmes (2009), and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011). The role of the nineteen year old Holmes will be played by the twenty-six year old Hero Fiennes Tiffin who had previously worked with Ritchie on The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.[4]
In June, Fiennes Tiffin's uncle Joseph Fiennes was cast as Sherlock's father, alongside Natasha McElhone as his mother.[5] In July, Zine Tseng, Colin Firth and Dónal Finn joined the cast.[6][7][8]
Filming of the series began in the United Kingdom in July 2024.[9]
Release
[edit]Young Sherlock will consist of 8 episodes and will air on Prime Video.[4]
