Future-Proof Your Career – Building an Immersive Future, with John Keefe

Biography

With more than two decades working in immersive and interactive technology, and as Co-founder and CTO of Draw & Code, I’ve delivered consistent innovation and growth in an emerging market. Collaborating with the biggest brands and technology partners on planet earth, innovation is in my DNA.

Master of all things Extended Reality ( XR – AR, MR & VR ) with multiple patents granted, I’m just getting started.

VR could always could be seen as like, a form of teleportation, you know, you travel to this other place, whereas mixed reality and augmented reality, you are just extending the reality.

John's Q&A

What Is Draw & Code and What Are they Good At?

Draw & Code bring together physical and digital experiences to tell stories and we create the technologies to enable the experiences.  We bring three components together, which are, people, places, and storytelling. We specialise in looking at technologies that can either capture places or capture people and then we enable these kind of story experiences to happen through our technologies.

Briefly Describe the Difference Between VR, AR & MR

VR could always could be seen as like, a form of teleportation, you know, you travel to this other place, whereas mixed reality and augmented reality, you are just extending the reality.

What Kind of Projects do you Enjoy Working On?

I love the large scale projects, building the world out from scratch. So super creative, storytelling projects. Look at the likes of Disney and their Ips with Star Wars and Marvel Universe. It would be great to work on those kinds of ips with the technologies we are pioneering in.

We have worked on some phenomenal projects up to now.

What's one of your favourites uses for immersive tech?

Virtual reality has proved incredibly effective for pain relief and things like this. So there was an experiment with a burns victim, and they put a VR headset on them and then they made it look like they were in this icy cave.

When they were monitoring the patient, their pain levels reduced massively from being in virtual reality.  The virtual environment was actually more effective than actually giving them painkillers because, the brains so powerful.

The thinking is that virtual reality can also be used to perhaps stimulate the same, similar effects.

How Can Immersive Be Used to Increase Inclusivity?

Immersive allows us to cater for, the environmental needs that individuals might have.

There’s a lot more inclusivity that can be added to the design element of an experience. Also for some people, it’s not just about a visual experiences, it is also about an audio experience as well, for people who are blind for example.
