THE BRIEF

Draw & Code were tasked with creating an augmented reality experience that brings to life the different aspects of Liverpool John Moores University’s engineering and science courses in an interactive and engaging way.

A 2D poster can only tell you so much – mobile AR allows the images to come to life and do a lot more. Learning should be fun and fascinating which had to be reflected in the AR experience

THE PROCESS

Draw & Code created a point-and-tap contextual AR experience that put the University’s promotional poster at its heart. At education events the LJMU stand was adorned with this artwork and staff handed tablets to visitors to enable them to explore the course via AR interactions.

3D animations that illustrate the areas of study appear to pop up from the poster. From there the user is invited to click on other content such as behind-the-scenes footage from the course or to learn how LJMU are investing in engineering facilities.

THE DELIVERY

Using Vuforia to deliver the marker-based AR app was a no-brainer – it’s the most versatile AR toolkit and works seamlessly with Unity 3D. The app had to be easy to grasp in seconds, so short, sharp vignettes peppered with ‘wow moments’ was the order of the day.

The AR experience has since been featured in Liverpool John Moore’s University recruitment events creating a fun immersive experience for students. The reaction to the posters has been tremendous and the promotions team predict it will help them in their aims of driving more applications to the engineering department.
