Just a little over a week ago, I received an invite to attend the State of the Word, in-person. At first glance, I smiled and set aside, as a cross-country trip for a 3 hour event did not seem feasible. If I only knew what would transpire. A couple of days later a colleague of mine, once learning about the invite, encouraged me to go. On its second lap in my thoughts, I started to lean towards going. And to be honest, it must have been a hard lean as the next thing I know I’m booking a flight.

Well, that’s when a few unexpected roadblocks popped up around travel plans. Without boring you to death, it didn’t seem like I would be able to hit the friendly skies dues to some ID restrictions in Washington state where I live. Talk about ups and downs.

As my wife and I were driving early last Wednesday morning, I was still bummed about not going. In all the stress the night before between booking and cancelling flights, well, I had peeked at the Amtrak site. Which for you outside of the US, that is our train system. You will notice that I said I only peeked. But during that drive I told Judy that I had looked at the possibility of taking a train. I said it half-humorously. She simple replied, Why don’t you? And that is when hell broke loose.

Anyone who knows me also understands that if a seed is planted in my brain, well, a full grown tree will replace my entire head in most cases within a short amount of time.

6,500 mile, 8 day, two-way, cross county train trip

And so began the makings of a 6,500 mile, 8 day, two-way, cross county train trip to the WordPress State of the Word 2021. And yes, you heard that right. But this isn’t about me lounging on the train and enjoying the sights and sounds of NYC. Sure the latter will surround me, but this is about the WordPress community and having you join me for the wild and crazy adventure.

So, I will be leaving Seattle, Washington on December 10th and arriving in NYC on the 13th. Will leave NYC on the 15th and arrive home on the 18th. What happens between this two dates I would like to say are going to be fun, community-filled and maybe even a little magical. Think of 6,500 miles of content and experiences all leading up to the State of the Word, with a lot of follow-up. In fact, each day brings new ideas and people into play, So much that I am reluctant to share a lot of the details in this podcast. But heck, I could give you some hints.

  • Shout-outs to community members across the country
  • Podcasts not only from me, but with some WordPress people along the way and in NYC.
  • Audio and visual updates constantly and some other things up my sleeve.

In fact, there is actually someone who will be joining me on the train for a small leg of the trip over to NYC.

In fact, I feel that a lot of what comes out of this adventure will also happen organically, so who know what you will see or hear.

Again, I am holding off on sharing a lot of the details but am hoping you will join me. I will have three ways that you can do that.

  • First thing. I will be posting all of the content and updates on the Do the Woo site. That will be a page specifically for the trip
  • Secondly, all podcasts will be shared through this feed so if you haven’t subscribed, you can find it on any of your pod apps.
  • And lastly, I will be using the hashtag that I will share soon.

Before I close out I would like to mention that I am looking for 4 sponsors to join me on this adventure and I will be announcing them shortly.

So I hope you join me on what is bound to be a unique adventure from Do the Woo.
