At a time when training plans are available freely on the internet, when Generative AI will soon provide customized plan based on vast amounts of training log data, why would you bother reading a book about “running your first ultra”?
I read this book back in 2018, as I signed up for my first 50K (TNF, which got canceled, but somehow the training, and maybe this book, had gotten me the bug!). I valued the training plans and the guidance that they provided, but more than anything, I loved everything else in the book. So whenever I have a friend who thinks about running their first ultra, I suggest they spend time with this book! A few months ago, I loaned this book to a friend and was reminded I should have it as a book highlight.
The book embodies the fact than an ultra is much more than the specific training and the race execution. It’s a journey, a mind altering experience and reading about it through Krissy’s words before experiencing it myself (even though each person’s experience will be different) was empowering, uplifting and inspiring.
Maybe it is the writing from a top female athlete which resonated with me? But maybe it is also the raw openness, maybe the quotes of inspiration or the stories of messy races, …
Training theory has evolved and will continue to evolve as science progresses but there is still much value in learning from personal experiences and join an incredible journey with Krissy!
