The recent snow melt has us dreaming of big summer adventures and pushing ourselves in the beautiful Sierras. The Eastern Sierra offer incredible trails only a few hours from the Truckee-Tahoe area and make for a perfect destination for short, long or multi-day adventures. The book, The Sierra Trail Runs: A guide to the East side, offers incredible advice and inspiration to help you safely and respectfully plan an adventure that fits your fitness and experience.
Before skipping to the specific runs, I encourage you to spend an hour or two reading the introduction, to get to know the authors, the land you are about to visit and get critical safety information and gear recommendation before venturing out.
Each run is clearly described with photos, level of technicality, exposure, elevation profile. That will really help you identify a run that matches the level of adventure and duration of your run. Miles can be very long in the Eastern Sierras if you go through steep and/or technical terrain. You can also access the corresponding GPS files online so that you can download the route on your watch.
As the author repeat multiple times, it is an important responsibility to write the first trail running guide about the Eastern Sierras because it may bring new people to the area. They do a great job educating the readers about respecting the land and one’s own abilities, so please do your part and explore this special place while leaving it better than you found it.
