✍ Crafting an Effective AI Council Charter in Healthcare & Life Sciences Continuing our ongoing discussions on AI Council for GenAI acceleration (post 1 - https://lnkd.in/eW2QhTKR; post 2 - https://lnkd.in/egbJmTps), let’s dive deeper into what might be literally the first task for AI Council i.e. establishing and maintaining a well-defined AI Council Charter. A well-crafted charter not only mitigates risks but also drives responsible AI innovation. The healthcare and life sciences sector faces unique challenges, including bias in AI algorithms, data privacy concerns, and the complexities of regulatory compliance. Addressing these challenges, as part of their charter, is critical for the success of the AI Council. Drafting a charter as the AI Council's first deliverable sets the tone for expectations and its effectiveness in leading GenAI adoption. This process may benefit from engaging a partner or consultant for a smooth experience. Below, I am sharing my mental model on charter development, giving insight into what it takes to deliver. As a new AI Council of diverse internal leaders, expect to go through norming, storming, and forming stages while drafting a charter. For a common understanding, I recommend members review key documents from government and NGO entities, such as FDA's AI & Medical Products white paper, White House's AI Bill of Rights, WHO's AI health regulations, and EU's AI Act. Give members ample time to familiarize themselves with these materials. Next, invite them for collaborative charter-defining workshops, ideally offsite to avoid distractions. During this 2-4 day event, use design thinking to gather inputs on purpose, scope, goals, challenges, roles, responsibilities, deliverables, KPIs, structure, and alignment with medical/scientific rigor. This iterative process should allow time for idea generation, sharing, grouping, and prioritizing. Using prioritized ideas, facilitate a session for participants to collaboratively draft the charter, combining key elements identified. Define the team's Purpose, Goals, Roles, Responsibilities, KPIs, Deliverables, and Structure. Allow ample time to ensure alignment and commitment from your cross-functional AI Council. Next, seek council feedback on clear, measurable KPIs (e.g., AI implementations, compliance rates) to gauge effectiveness. Align on audit cadence and PMO support. Consider additional measures: communication strategy, surveys, ethical incident analysis, impact assessments, and benchmark comparisons. Recently, I had the opportunity to work on a project aimed at quantifying these risks for a leading medtech client. Here's a glimpse into our approach and key findings: 📄 Our Approach: Tender Analysis: We meticulously reviewed a range of public tender texts to extract sustainability criteria and requirements. Mathematical Modeling: We developed a sophisticated model to translate these requirements into potential financial impacts, converting various scenarios into USD at stake. 💡 Key Findings: Despite our client being a top performer in sustainability, the analysis revealed a crucial insight: the financial risks of underperformance in sustainability far outweigh the potential gains from overperformance. This asymmetry highlights a critical strategic point: medtech companies cannot afford to neglect their sustainability efforts. Failing to meet sustainability standards can significantly increase commercial risks, allowing competitors to catch up and even overtake market leaders. 📈 Strategic Implications: Investment in Sustainability: Continuous investment in sustainability practices and technologies is essential not just for compliance, but for maintaining market leadership. Karel's DIGest #62 - WARD 24/7 - AI tool for early deterioration alarms Dear readers, let me share the story of people who thought deeply about how they could make healthcare better. The story starts with two anesthesiologists, Eske Kvanner Aasvang and Christian Sylvest Meyhoff. They began thinking about how the rapid rescue teams could get earlier notice that something might be wrong. Typically, deterioration occurs suddenly, requiring teams to act quickly. They sought a solution and created a public project called WARD, which stands for Wireless Assessment of Respiratory and Circulatory Distress. It is an innovative clinical support system for doctors and nurses, allowing them to monitor patients' acute medical disease progression or postoperative course. This is exactly one of those great tools I write about that help us act earlier and prevent patients from reaching more severe health conditions. Essentially, the project delivers an important message: it is absolutely worth replacing manual patient monitoring with continuous 24/7 observation of peripheral oxygen saturation, heart rate, respiration rate, blood pressure, etc. Thanks to this and WARD's AI algorithm, you can set alarms for important deviations. It is fantastic that this project reached the point where it was possible to create a danish commercial spinoff called WARD 24/7 , meaning the functionality is commercially available. WARD 24/7 comes to your hospital, connects to your continuous monitoring systems, and provides your staff with a device that shows an alarm whenever there are signs of possible patient deterioration. The principle behind it is an AI algorithm that works with the data from these continuous monitoring systems. “Cardiology continues to have the second largest number of clinical artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, trailing only radiology. The FDA's latest update covers all AI approvals through May 2024. There are now 122 FDA-cleared AI algorithms specific to cardiology. This makes up 14% of the 882 clinical AI algorithms now on the U.S. market. The new FDA numbers include market clearances up to March 31, 2024. The first approval of a clinical AI algorithm was in 1995. The first cardiology specific algorithm was for HeartFlow FFR-CT in 2016. What are the unique challenges of building digital platforms in healthcare and how can ecosystem parties collaborate toward a common good? I was fortunate to explore this question with Frank Konopka, Principal Key Expert for Digital Business Model Operations at Siemens Healthineers in the latest episode of #TheDigitalPodcast. Frank offers a deep dive into the competitive tensions between upstream and downstream platforms, the challenges of IP rights protection in relation to raw and annotated data, the role of regulation and the need for democratization through the use of open source software. In the short clip below (https://lnkd.in/dJUxczsq), Frank explains that while upstream platforms provide improved services (e.g. AI workflow systems) to existing medical devices such as MRI scanners, downstream platforms provide direct services to patients. Med tech companies are careful not to enter the downstream arena as this creates value capture tensions between their customers (e.g. the hospitals) and their customers' customers (e.g. the patients). However, there is one significant hurdle healthcare companies often encounter when trying to implement AI and machine learning. The data architecture of current legacy systems in healthcare settings prevents implementing many use cases and limits a company’s ability to benefit from these technologies fully. Legacy systems might have served their purpose in the healthcare space for decades, but technological advances enable better healthcare workflows, reduced administrative burden and more. Modernizing legacy systems by eliminating data silos results in numerous benefits, including improved work-life balance for physicians. Notably, we are a long way away from having AI serve as a substitute for clinician decision-making. Immediate use of AI in the coming years will focus on supplementing healthcare providers, allowing them the ability to scale.
