At Duolingo, we take food seriously. This is because food is a representation of culture and it is also a way to bring people together, just like languages. We offer breakfast 🍳 and lunch 🍔 at the office made by our talented chefs. The entire company blocks their calendar at lunch (execs included) so that we can catch up and enjoy our meal together. 💚 Our food options are rooted in the diversity we have at our company, to ensure every single person feels represented across cultures, regions, and flavors. 🍱 🌮 🥐 One way we do this is through our series of international lunches like Lunar New Year with Miso Cured Cod and Orange Tofu or our Philippines lunch with Chicken Adobo and Lumpia. It’s tough out there for an owl 😅 Seriously though: kudos to our incredible Duolingo artists, whose work has real business impact. This app icon change was talked about all over the internets and drove tons of learners to open their app and do a lesson. I was talking about these amazing results with Gregory Hartman who said, “It’s crazy how much influence our artists have on our brand! A single, well-placed illustration can not only drive more traffic to our app but can also reveal something special about our brand and our beloved little owl. The artists are a huge part of what drives love for Duolingo and I’m not sure how much the general public knows that.” This is one of my favorite parts about working at Duolingo. We get to be silly and push brand boundaries in the name of something really good: helping people learn something new. People know Duolingo for its personalized lessons, but we use AI in many other places across our products. Our in-house experts spend a lot of time thinking about how AI can support and scale their work so that they can get new content to learners faster than ever before. Here is a non-exhaustive list of where AI enhances the Duolingo experience: - Assembling personalized lessons - Determining when learner’s should review old content - Generating interactive exercises from expert-created raw content - Auto-suggested text in freeform exercises - Generating a range of possible accepted translations - Grading exercises - Creating character voices - Generating DuoRadio scripts - Generating real-time responses in Role Play - Providing context on mistakes with Explain My Answer - Triggering character animations with Rive - The Duolingo English Test question generation and scoring - Deciding when to send push notifications - A few more exciting features I can’t talk about just yet 🤐
