Jean-Paul Valley was an agent of the catholic military order Order of St. Dumas, known as Azrael (named after the Angel of Death). Eventually, he became a more independent vigilante after acting as Batman when the original was broken by Bane in Gotham City, but he was forcibly fired from the role and returned to his position as Azrael. His ancestors had belonged to the Order for generations, but Jean-Paul was unaware that he was being controlled by the 500-year old organization.

During his youth, he was put in severe amounts of subconscious training and conditioning from The System and was raised in a test tube, being put through various DNA experimentation in his fetal state. His physiology allows him enhanced strength, speed and reflexes and even durability, and he uses the Suit of Sorrows, an advanced armor that harbors an AI that identifies the weak points in enemies. He has been a member of the Order of St. Dumas, Batman FamilyJustice League Task ForceJustice League Odyssey, Black Lantern CorpsOutsiders, Gotham Knights, and The Colony.

Jean-Paul Valley was created by Dennis O'Neil and Joe Quesada, first appearing in Batman: Sword of Azrael #1 (1992).
