When the summer sun screams across Mexico’s city streets and sandy beaches, mangonadas come to the rescue. Also called chamangos, they can be made with any combination of mango sorbet, chopped fresh mango or mango purée, and may or may not be spiked, but they’ll always contain the salty, spicy and tangy flavors of Tajín and chamoy. Tajín, a chile-lime salt, is a delicious addition to sweet and savory foods alike. Its sister condiment, chamoy, is traditionally made from fermented fruit, salt, sugar and chiles. Depending on your location, you can find Tajín, chamoy and tamarind straws — their sour, chewy coating adds an extra tickle of tartness — at supermarkets or Latin American grocers; all three are available online.

Yield:4 servings
  • 5large ripe mangoes (about 15 ounces each), peeled, pitted and cut into ½-inch pieces (about 8 cups), or 2½ pounds frozen mango, defrosted
  • ¼cup granulated sugar, or to taste
  • ¼cup fresh lime juice (from 2 fresh limes)
  • cups cold water, or as needed
  • ¾cup silver tequila or rum (optional)
  • ¾ to 1cup chamoy
  • Tajín, to taste
  • 4tamarind candy straws (optional)

Preparation

  1. Step 1

    Place 5 cups mango in a blender, reserving the remaining mango. Add the sugar, lime juice and ¾ cup cold water to the blender, and blend on medium-high speed until puréed. Blend in tequila or rum, if using. Blend in additional water, adding ¼ cup at a time, until mango mixture reaches the desired consistency.

  2. Step 2

    Chill mango mixture, covered, in refrigerator until ready to serve. For a colder mangonada, transfer mixture to the freezer until it reaches the consistency of a slushy.

  3. Step 3

    To serve, pour or scoop about ½ cup of mango mixture into each of four 16-ounce glasses. Add about ⅓ cup reserved mango to each glass, followed by 1½ to 2 tablespoons chamoy and a generous sprinkle of Tajín. Repeat with the remaining mango mixture, mango pieces, chamoy and a final sprinkling of Tajín on top. Garnish each glass with a tamarind candy straw, if using, and a spoon. Serve immediately.

Couldn't one start with frozen mango chunks instead of making the puree and freezing?

If looking for an easy Chamoy recipe, I found this one from Rick Bayless: 1 cup of apricot jam (or mango jam) 1/4 cup of fresh lime juice 2 teaspoons ancho chile powder 1/2 teaspoon of salt Simply put all the ingredients into a blender and puree until smooth. For a spicier sauce just add more chile powder.

Marianne M - if you Google DIY Tajin you can find recipes - it is chili, lime and salt. But, the real thing is available in many grocery stores these days, even (gasp) Walmart. Or, you know, so I'm told...

Thank you for this recipe. I have had these from a Mexican food truck at a flea market and it was the perfect drink for a hot day. I bought the Tajin and Chamoy and hoped to find a recipe for this drink but have been unsuccessful until now.

Trader Joe's has it as well and it's called Chili Lime Salt.

Trying instead with mezcal and expecting perfection!

i'm a gringo and i love both tajin and chamoy. my regular grocery store (market basket in new england) carries tajin but i have to get chamoy online (got mine from mexgrocer.com). chamoy & tajin whether together or separate are great on lots of fruit - i love watermelon stamped in a little pile of tajin especially. if you're not sure, try a piece of mango with a little of each on it first before you go assembling everything. if you don't care for it, you can still serve mango margaritas :)

It's a Mexican product. It's actually a thick sauce. I will say it's pretty salty. Red is color. The recipe calls for up to two tbsp of this stuff. I would strongly recommend starting out with maybe a half teaspoon and working your way up from there.

Just offering a shout-out to TAJIN (available at Target!). It is fabulous on so many things! Fruit, meats, fish, veges....

I've seen cans of Alfonso mango puree in the Indian grocery stores. I imagine I could use that? Alfonso mangoes from India are the BEST (not to be confused with Altufo mangoes from Mexico) and only available for a month or 2.

I always ALWAYS use frozen mango to skip using ice and plus it is more refreshing cold.

So I had chamoy and tijan but no mango, and I was eager to try this recipe in our current NYC heat wave. I dripped a judicious mixture on a small bowl of high quality mango sorbet, and it was delicious!

This was quite refreshing in the midst of a hot summer. I used a combination of fresh, frozen and canned mango. Froze the mixture in lightweight aluminum cups in the freezer. I never could find the tamarind straws, even here on the Mexican border

I love these since I moved here. Tajin Classico is a brand spice mixture of dried chili, lime, and salt. It's used here liberally in drinks (ex: margaritas) and food. Chamoy is tamarind juice. It's the sour, tangy note against the fresh, sweet mango. This drink hits most of your taste buds: sweet, sour, spicy, salty. For authenticity, if you aren't using SUPER ripe mango, add sugar. This is a sweet drink. Stevia is a good substitute, tastes like sugar when applied to fruit. Use less, to taste.

So good! Garnished with chamoy peach rings. *drool*. The Mega chamoy brand is runnier and pinker than Tajin making it easier to blend and prettier, though overall Takin tastes better and has better ingredients.

So, it’s 106 here today. This recipe seemed like it would be the perfect refreshment for our get together. I used frozen mango chunks blended with mango nectar which I then put into the freezer and stirred several times over the course of several hours. It was a delicious slush, almost like a sorbet. I followed the recipe, using chamoy and Tajin, along with chopped fresh sweet mango. I served it in pre-chilled aluminum cups. Rum or tequila were optional, added at the end. A huge hit!

I just discovered Tajin Clasico seasoning, and I really don't know how I lived without it--just the right spiciness with a lime kick. Buy it now, seriously--you will regret it otherwise (:

I made homeade chamoy for this using apricots, prunes, hibiscus flower and seasonings. It came out great! Would’ve been good without the chamoy too.

Good. Sent away on internet for tamarind straws, worth it. Very pretty! We thought the rum should be added to individual glasses, as ours turned out to be unevenly distributed across servings - we put the mango mixture in the freezer, and think the rum might have migrated to the bottom of the bowl.

What brand of Chamoy do you recommend? I’ve tried homemade Chamoy from Mexico and it’s amazing, the ones I’ve bought in the US doesn’t taste nothing like it...

Our expectations were high as it looked refreshing and attractive. Unfortunately it was hardly palatable and everyone struggled to finish even half a glass. Would strongly recommend cutting the Chamoy down to a tablespoon at most instead 3/4c and be sure you use ripe sweet mango.

An absolute winner—especially with tequila! Re: all the questions about Tajin and chamoy, commenters should check the recipe headnote, which clearly says both are available online. They’ll find countless other uses for both!

what is chamoy? I guess Tajin is a spice. I would guess that not everyone has these items in the cabinets. A note would have been halpful
