Wickman House, a fine-dining destination at the tip of Wisconsin’s Door County peninsula, serves as many Moscow Mules today as it does the state’s beloved brandy old-fashioneds. The Wickman recipe is the classic formula: vodka and lime juice topped with ginger beer and served over ice in a copper mug. —Robert Simonson

Why do you consider the copper mug a must? Genuinely curious.

My younger son does a double-ginger mule. Grated ginger macerates in vodka for a day, then more or less as written. Really good.

To answer Stephen G's question about "why the copper mug" for Moscow Mules - vodka oxidizes the copper, giving a bigger flavor and aroma. Also, more bubbles means more fizziness from the carbonated ginger beer.

This really is the perfect summer drink. The copper mug is a must. Find them on Amazon. I agree that Fever Tree is just the right ginger beer, but I also like Regatta. These have enough ginger to stand up to the ice and lime.

So the Fever Tree ginger beer made my mouth feel like it was on fire. I like Barritts better. It is much smoother.

I recently served these at a party using fresh ginger juice (run fresh ginger through a heavy duty juicer) , vodka, bitters, lime and soda. Was a delicious summery hit.

Q brand Ginger beer is spectacular, not a lot of sugar but lots of bite. Also a crushed fresh basil leaf is lovely in the summer.

The taste of this is really all about the taste of the ginger beer. Completely. If you don't like the taste of the ginger beer that you're using, then you won't like the Moscow Mule.

To the person wondering why a copper mug is recommended - it's the same reason a proper wine glass is recommended to enjoy a fine wine, or a proper beer glass is preferred which varies on the style of beer. There is a synergy which happens when you pair a drink to its proper glass. Sure, you can drink it out of an old brown shoe if you wish, but it won't be as perfect as it will be from an ice cold copper mug.

Luxury Moscow Mule (Arundel Inn, Kennebunkport) * 2 ounces Bar Hill Gin * 1 ounce Cardamaro * 1 ounce Triple Sec * Splash of fresh lime juice * Finish with ginger beer (as much as 4-6 ounces) Combine gin, Cardamaro, Triple Sec, and lime juice into a cocktail shaker with ice. Strain the contents of the shaker into an ice-filled glass and add ice cold ginger beer to taste. Absolutely divine.

A Mule done with Rye in place of the vodka is truly a thing of beauty.

Add a fresh slice of ginger to make it extra spicy. Also hit it with a bit of chocolate angosta bitters. I promise this elevates it.

I’ve been shaking the ginger beer with the vodka and lime juice, but this really is better.

Cocktail shaker with ice is essential.

I guess the Mike can be relegated to summer, but they are so fresh and flavorful as to make a nice and different holiday drink for New Year’s!!!

Only had Maker’s Mark at the time, so I made a Kentucky Mule with the same amounts of Fever Tree and lime juice. Delicious!

This beverage uses the copper mug because copper is very good at conducting temperature. When an iced mule is poured, the glass takes on the temperature, and keeps the drink frosty cold longer.

Love this; I sometimes make it with grapefruit vodka for what I like to call a Miami Mule.

Reed's is a great ginger beer that we love even more than Fever Tree. They have several intensities of ginger- original, extra, and strongest. My fam loves strongest.

I’ve found the best ginger beer - for me anyway- is the 4 pack 6 oz bottles of Schweppes 1865, gingery, not too sweet. Q has chili for spiciness, I want only ginger, and most of the others are far too sweet. I wish this came in a liter bottle, I’m spending a fortune on it. Pellegrino ginger beer is a fairly close second. I’ve always wondered why some have lime flavoring. Fresh limes are cheap and so much better.

I agree. Q is the best.

Did 1 cup of vodka for every cup of lime juice

I had a spicy mule in a restaurant recently made with jalapeno infused vodka. A nice added "kick".

A fun twist I've done before is using cucumber vodka. It really just adds to the crisp, clean, refreshing taste of the cocktail.
