Combine lime juice, bourbon and syrup to taste in a small pitcher or cocktail shaker. If possible, let mixture chill in refrigerator or freezer until very cold.
Pour over ice in a rocks glass and top with ginger beer. Depending on the sweetness of the ginger beer, you may want to add a little more lime juice. Garnish with a lime slice.
I turned 21 tonight, and am typing this at 2a.m. while buzzed and/or drunk, while making tons of typos (being fixed while happening). This was my first drink, and I loved it! Thanks.

If you make a Nor'easter using this recipe, you'll never have a second. We basically use the proportions to make two drinks and a little more ginger beer (always Fever Tree).
With both Wild Turkey's Rare Breed and Kentucky Spirit, save the syrup for your pancakes and warm your bones by a fire. I forgot freezing trees and streets altogether relaxed in recliner watching flames flicker.
Also - this makes one cocktail? Wow. 4 oz. Bourbon for one. This will definitely make me unaware of the actual nor'easter that's coming up in a few days.
Have made this favorite for years, and my recommendation for two drinks: 2 oz lime juice; 4 oz bourbon; 1 oz maple syrup; one 7.5-oz can of spicy ginger beer (I like Q brand).
Mid Covid-19, I just found this. Used Woodford Reserve and a fresh squeezed lime. Also, Gosling's Sugar Free Ginger Beer. Made one original strength for myself and one half strength (with more ginger beer, too) for my older offspring as we try to navigate 4 adults in 1800 square feet for more than 50 days now.
Better with rye. If you can get maple syrup direct from the producer even better, just don't use too much. The spicier the ginger beer the better.
Florence said in cocktails, unless bottled lime juice is specified, it's always fresh.
This is a truly fantastic Fall cocktail! Used Fever Tree brand ginger beer with great results. If followed exactly, the measurements in this recipe yield enough for two moderately sized drinks.
Who says Senators can't work across the aisle? September is National Bourbon Heritage Month. "...declared by the U.S. Senate in 2007 by resolution as a way to celebrate the uniquely American history of bourbon." Who knew? Not me until now. That learning coinciding with this new to me libation recipe popping up in the same week seemed kismet. And this is a keeper. But.. ...it serves 2 not 1 ...best proportions 4 oz bourbon, 2 oz lime, 1 oz maple ...rye works too ...Q ginger beer yummy
This was delicious. Definitely don’t skimp on the lime juice. I concur with the sentiment that the recipe is really for 2 drinks, not one!
Good substitute for the Ginger Beer: Ginger Syrup and Apple Cider along with smoked maple syrup.
Call me a heretic if you want - no stoning please! - but I made it with ginger kombucha, and it was delicious!
This is good with either rye or bourbon. If you plan ahead, it's even better if you can leave it in the freezer the day before. I don't know why, but it's perfect super cold and with ice still.
The Nor’ Easter or “how to make four ounces of bourbon disappear without even knowing.” Great balance of flavors that tastes at home in the fall, winter, or spring.
Quite enjoyable. One caveat — 4 ounces of any spirit makes 2 drinks. Or a double. But it’s not one drink, so I shared!
Many moons ago, there was a bar in Bushwick called (Tandem) that made a hot version of this drink: bourbon, lemon, ginger simple/juice. It got me through many hard times. This cold option is tasty too — I still prefer (and use) lemon over lime.
This is basically a recipe for two as there’s no way this can fit in one rocks glass and four ounces will put us all on the floor! LOL
I was looking for something this afternoon that could help alleviate the symptoms of a fourth COVID-19 infection and I settled on this…with one adjustment since I didn’t have ginger beer. In lieu of the ginger beer I substituted 1.5 teaspoons of fresh ginger. I only wish I could share this drink. It’s really a drink intended to serve two, not one IMHO. It’s quite lovely.
I found this a bit too strong for what I was looking for, this is more of a slow sipper. I ended up adding more ginger beer and it was a bit more like what I was looking for.
cut the bourbon down to 2 oz per drink if you want to use the rocks glass as pictured. This is similar to a Kentucky mule with maple syrup ad a lime garnish instead of mint.
Is that a typo on 4 oz bourbon?
Going to take a wild guess and say it’s supposed to be 2 oz bourbon and 4 oz ginger beer.
I thought at first the 4 oz. of bourbon for one drink must be a typo…but now I’ve seen the light; aka, why this is one of the very few 5-star NYT recipes I’ve tasted (so many, many 4s!).
Less syrup, too sweet
This is definitely 2 drinks. Clues: (1) how is 8 floz of liquid plus ice supposed to fit in one rocks glass? (2) 4oz bourbon! Other recipes on the web use the same ratios but cut in half for one drink.
Great cocktail recipe - but share this with a friend! Four ounces of bourbon is a bit insane for a single drink. We found them to be better with a bit less lime juice - say 3/4 of an ounce. Best for a corn-based or a wheated bourbon - e.g. Weller or Maker's Mark - rather than one with a lot of rye in it (Bulleit e.g.).
I’m a lightweight so I only did 2oz bourbon for one drink, and I cut the maple syrup down to 1/2oz.
