Energy permeates every aspect of our lives. Space agencies, governments and innovators are reshaping the concepts of energy efficiency and renewable resources, creating a blueprint for a cleaner, more interconnected Europe.

Space-based systems play a significant role in the energy industry but their potential to accelerate the green energy transition goes beyond their current impact. The applications of space-based data in renewable energy are diverse, ranging from mapping and measuring wind, wave, tidal, and solar resources to already established roles in satellite communications, navigation, and Earth observation. Benefits from such services extend across the entire energy production and supply process, encompassing resource identification, network control and monitoring, and policy formulation and enforcement.

However, the sector faces an incredible challenge with electrical consumption expected to double by 2050, as governments around the world commit to decreased reliance on fossil fuels and adopt green alternatives. Meanwhile, there are more stringent goals for primary and final energy consumption efficiency.

    New Climate Targets

European and national public authorities are raising the standards for energy efficiency and renewable energies. Ongoing efforts by governments and institutions such as the European Green Deal and Clean Energy for All Europeans package have led to the establishment of these standards. Measures like setting climate targets, creating low emission zones, improving emission monitoring, and adjusting prices based on CO2 emissions are reshaping the market.

    The Role of Space

Leveraging digitalisation, satellite connectivity, and space applications offers a multitude of opportunities to bolster energy security and accelerate the transition to green energy. These advancements can provide effective solutions for the challenges faced by the energy sector around the world.

ESA’s vision is that space will play a crucial role in ensuring secure, sustainable, and accessible energy for all.
