Aviation and urban air mobility are continually enhanced through space-based services, introducing new capabilities and enhancing safety and efficiency.

Satellite services play a critical role in aviation, with extensive use in Air Traffic Management, Airline Operational Communications, and passenger in-flight connectivity. These services improve airport management and meteorological applications, improving both safety and efficiency in the industry.

Expansion into Urban and Low Altitude Airspaces

Urban Air Mobility (UAM) is an innovative sector in aviation that offers on-demand, automated air transportation for passengers and cargo in urban and suburban areas. UAM operates primarily in low altitude airspace and is currently most advanced in drone applications for short-range surveillance and package delivery. In the future, this evolving sector aims to include a broader range of vehicles, from small drones to larger passenger aircraft, facilitating intra-city and peripheral urban travel.

The increased use of drones in urban and suburban brings challenges for Remote Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS). RPAS is revolutionising transport, but also presents hurdles in navigating unsegregated airspace. Addressing these challenges is crucial as it enables the expansion into new market opportunities.

    Towards Greener Aviation Practices

Both aviation sectors, traditional and UAM, have an increasing focus on achieving CO2-neutral mobility. ESA supports this transition by enabling technologies that help pilots and air traffic controllers identify the most efficient and fuel-saving flight routes, reducing the environmental impact and transforming contemporary travel methods.
