sturdy and reliable - Gotrax APEX XL Electric Scooter, Honeycomb Solid Tires 250 Watt, max 15.5mph
sturdy and reliable - review update - Gotrax APEX XL Electric Scooter, Internal Honeycomb Solid Tires 250 Watt motor up to 15.5mph-March 30, 2024 Update - updated solid tire version-EXECUTIVE SUMMARYWith modifications such as its new honeycomb internal structure solid tires (see photo figure 6), its new base of tiller reinforcement band (see photo figure 5), disc brakes, cruise control, real 15 mph flat surface top speed, and the all metal undercarriage plate it had already (see photo figure 4), this 250 Watt entry level Electric Kick Scooter is a five star product.-Among the most important attributes of the entry level Gotrax APEX XL Electric Kick Scooter are its sturdiness and its reliability.-CONSTRUCTION FEATURES (UPDATED)- sturdy all metal undercarriage base plate (essential for any and all e-scooters!)- heavy duty reinforcement band at the base of its tiller (its vertical mast) (see photo figure 5)- Superbly designed folding mechanism that folds at its base platform, not higher up (see photo figure 3)- large bright LCD control panel- stainless steel disc brakes.- honeycomb internal structure solid tires (no more flat inner tubes) and actually a smoother ride!- (see photo figure 6)--USER INTERACTION FEATURES- drive by wire acceleration with cruise control.- stainless steel disc braking combined with electric eABS integrated with its motor- LCD control display with accurate and easy to read speed and battery consumption.-EASE OF ASSEMBLYThe Gotrax APEX XL electric scooter arrives mostly assembled. All that needs to be done to complete assembly is to attach the handlebar unit and the brake cable.Gotrax provides the required Allen Wrench in the Gotrax APEX XL electric scooter box.-INTENDED USAGEThe entry level Gotrax APEX XL Electric Kick Scooter appears to be intended for people who live in flatter cities. For people who live in cities such as Chicago, Houston, Manhattan, and so on, and even cities with hills but with some flat sections, such as Seattle, this entry level scooter is a fine choice. Don't expect a 250 Watt motor scooter to be able to travel quickly up steep hills. That isn't this scooter's intended capability. For anyone who lives in cities with hills such as San Francisco, Gotrax makes scooters such as their G4 model with dual front and back 600 Watt motors and full spring suspension.-EXPECTATIONS SPEED AND RANGEThis is a 250 Watt entry level electric scooter. The Gotrax APEX XL Electric Scooter is a scooter for use around relatively flat areas, such as city riding. The Gotrax APEX XL Electric Scooter is great for a work commuter to put into a car's trunk, park upon city arrival, and then use to get around the city quickly. The Gotrax APEX XL Electric Scooter is also a scooter that does not weigh so much that it cannot be carried on a subway. It's fine to carry onto a subway like Seattle's Link light rail, the Washington, D.C. Metro, or the Boston T subway lines.-After using the Gotrax APEX XL Electric Scooter, even before the updated version of the Gotrax APEX XL Electric Scooter, I had already been planning to purchase the dual 600 Watt motor Gotrax G4 (see item B0C32PDRKJ), to be able to take on the steep hills of the city where I live. Yes, planning on owning more than one electric scooter!-SUGGESTIONS FOR GOTRAX- For the next update to the Gotrax APEX XL Electric Scooter, Gotrax needs to move the front reflector up higher on the forks cover so that it does not cover the Allen bolt underneath it. (see photo figure 7)- Add the front forks cowling units to the parts available on the Gotrax website.- List Gotrax electric scooter replacement parts on the amazon website, in addition to the Gotrax site.-GOTRAX CUSTOMER SUPPORTAmong the most important things Gotrax has done is to provide replacement parts for sale on their website. Much like owning a car, motorcycle, or bicycle, vehicles will eventually need replacement parts, such as the plastic fenders, and most importantly their battery (e-scooter batteries do not and cannot last forever).-CONCLUSIONSThe updated Gotrax APEX XL Electric Kick Scooter is a good choice for anyone looking for an economical entry level electric scooter. For someone who would like to try out the Electric Kick Scooter experience before investing in a high-end scooter such as the dual 600 Watt motor Gotrax G4 the Gotrax APEX XL Electric Kick Scooter is a smart starter scooter choice. With the sturdiness of the Gotrax APEX XL Electric Kick Scooter and its reliable day to day riding experience, its a keeper.============================previous review version October 20, 2023============================review of - Problematic Design - Gotrax APEX XL Electric Scooter, 8.5 inch Pneumatic Tire, 15 Mile Range 250W motor up to 15.5mph, Foldable, Headlight and Taillight-This otherwise nice, low powered, electric scooter, has some serious design flaws.-CHANGING TIRE INNER TUBES IS EXTRAORDINARILY DIFFICULT-Gotrax does not provide any information about how to change a tire inner tube on their Gotrax APEX XL scooter. Changing the air filled pneumatic tire inner tubes on this electric scooter is an absurdly difficult process.-Buyers beware that with any electric scooter that has pneumatic tires, you will get flat tires from time to time. The Gotrax owner’s manual does not provide any instructions or information about how to change the tires on their electric scooters. It took me over 3 hours to change the rear tire on my scooter the first time it went flat. The process involves disassembling the entire rear section of the scooter. Also, unlike large bicycle wheels, the geometry of the eight (8) inch wheels is such that getting the tire back onto the wheel after changing the wheel was nearly impossible.-Changing the inner tube of the front tire of the Gotrax APEX XL electric scooter is even worse than the back tire / wheel. First of all, and worst of all, one of the bolts that needs to be removed to gain access to the axle nut is covered by the glued on front fender yellow reflector. There are videos on the internet of misguided Gotrax scooter owners who end up destroying the plastic yellow reflector in order to try to gain access to the Allen bolt underneath. It is possible to remove the yellow front reflector without damaging the scooter (not too much anyway) by heating up the reflector with a hair dryer on high heat, which softens the glue underneath. Once the glue is soft the yellow reflector can be removed. What incompetent product designer / engineer made the decision to permanently glue this yellow reflector over an Allen bolt underneath that MUST be removed in order to change a front flat tire on this scooter? For this design scooter incompetence alone, Gotrax gets a one star review.-GENERAL FEATURES-In general, the Gotrax APEX XL is okay for a low powered scooter, notwithstanding the serious design flaws described above that makes tire inner tube changes a ridiculously involved, much too difficult, time consuming process.-Don’t expect to be able to travel up steep hills with the Gotrax APEX XL, because it will slow to a near walking pace on any hill steeper than a minor incline. The Gotrax APEX scooter under carriage is a solid aluminum material. This is important. Some other scooter manufacturers are cheaping out with a plastic under carriage plate, which means that scooters can’t last for long.-At first use expect to need to adjust the brakes. You’ll need your own Allen wrench to do it, but brake adjustment isn’t difficult.-CONCLUSION-The absurd scooter disassembly process required just to change a flat tire on the Gotrax APEX scooters earns them a one (1) star review. In fact, based on this experience, it seems like all electric scooters should use solid tires. The solid tires available provide as good a ride, and even a better ride than pneumatic tires. Please take notice Gotrax, and stop advertising scooters with air filled tires as though that is a beneficial feature, because it is not.

When I ordered the apex scooter from Go Trax I have to admit I was a little skeptical of the size and quality due the price point compared to other scooters. When I seen the box my worries subsided and curiosity took over. The weight had me thinking it must be much bigger then I anticipated or I might have got the wrong scooter but when I got up all 3 flights of stairs I found out that I did infact recieve the right scooter and would find out I made a good choice in the Go Trax Company. When I seen it was the same size as the bird and lime scooters I ride every time I need get accross town in a hurry. The Apex is perfect for someone who lives in the city as the 15.5 mph and Cruise control makes cruising around town much faster and a much smoother ride. It has disk brakes and 8.5 inch air filled tires. Its size makes it really stable while riding and the bigger tires are really great because you dont have to worry nearly as much about small holes and debris as I did with my previous scooter. The small tires were the biggest reason for the upgrade to the apex because I rarely felt completely comfortable just crusing because I was always worried about hitting a big hole or something in the road. I even had a spill or 2 as I was learning due to the smaller tires because you feel every bump and even a smaller size rock can land you on the pavement,so that is always on your mind with the smaller wheels. When I researched which scooter was the best fit for me, the GoTrax wasn't my first choice but Now that I've had it for a few months I know I made the right choice. The quality is the first thing you notice right out of the box. Its put together very well and the qaulity of parts and workmanship is very noticeable with the first ride. It rides Very smooth because of the air filled tires but im thinking of switching to the solid rubber aftermarket tires. I have had a few flat tires due to all the debris around the city and the solid tires will prevent flats but im afraid I will feel every bump and hole much harder.I have been using a product from slime that you put into the innertube and it seals it from the inside so you dont have to so much as loosin one single bolt and it seals very well. The battery on the apex last for around 15 to 18 miles per charge and charges very fast at about 5 hrs. The apex is by far the best scooter I've owned and will be purchasing from Go Trax every time I get anything in the electric scooter market! They have a huge selection of scooters for every purpose from offroad riding to long distance trips around town. I have also researched price points from many different companys and found Go Trax to be about the best priced on market which had me very worried when first deciding to order from Go Trax as I've found out many tomes you often get exactly what you pay for and scooters are no different. I found many company peddling what looked to be low qaulity and many design flaws due to making the cheapest scooter they can market. I learned first hand that the smaller scooters are not nearly as fun to ride because your always so focused on every bump so you dont end up on your backside. To be honeat some of those cheaper ones didnt look safe at all and would never trust one at full speed. Ive seen what seems to be smaller and smaller tires as the price point comes down which makes them dangerous to the younger and unexsperienced riders! So of your looking for a decent sized and well designed scooter then Go Trax is the company for you. The Apex model has all the bells and whistles for under $400 and is just as big as the bird and lime scooters you can rent around most major cities. Trust me the size is about the most important thing to get right because if your not confident in the scooter you buy then you wont have as much fun because you cant let loose and just cruse which is the whole reason for me purchasing the scooter, so size was the deciding factor for me after owning a few different models. Qaulity is very important to because if you dont have confidence in the quality you wont be able to let loose either because you will always be worried about something breaking. Hope this helps in your future purchase and hope you find the right model for you.

I purchased the apex xl scooter as an upgrade from my gotrax gxl V2, I owned 3 of those prior to this purchase. I paid for the 12 mile range/honeycomb (airless) tire model, but had received the 15 mile/pneumatic tire (air filled).

I was unaware of this until I received a blow out on the rear tire.

I contacted Gotrax customer support directly after realizing this, as I was outside the 14 day return/exchange from Amazon.

Skyler from Gotrax pretty much told me they would replace the scooter I had, with the honeycomb tire version at no cost to me, I just had to send it back to them with a label they provided me & I printed out

It took maybe 2.5 weeks for return and exchange process to fulfill

As far as the scooter goes - from my personal testing with both models:

I got the advertised milage out of both versions & both scooters had more "pep" than my old gxl V2 scooter.

Both models are rear drive motors & feature active brake light on the rear fender

I have had two fenders break on my old gxl V2 scooters over the years & the rear fender on the apex xl is much more reinforced - to the point I don't think it'll ever break

Tl:dr:

The apex XL is absolutely worth the money for the quality & features it has - bump the tighter weight by 40 & it'll be more accessible as well

Make sure you know if you're getting the honeycomb tire model, or pneumatic tires

I have been wanting to pick up an electric scooter for a long time because I wanted to substitute my car for the commute to the public transit stations and make short trips around the neighborhood.

BUILD QUALITY AND FEATURES

The scooter is build very solid, no creaks or funny sounds when operating it, and it really feels like it could take a beating. The standing position has a rubberized grip on it so you don't slip off, and it can be carried easily while it is folded with one hand. It is about 30lbs, so I wouldn't walk everywhere with it, but its light enough that you can move it from one place to another. The additional features like a blinking red light on the back when the brake is pressed, an LED headlight, solid feeling kickstand, and a very large heads-up-display are nice additions too.

RIDE FEEL

The air filled tires are fantastic, driving over the pavement with crack, the sidewalk, or moving onto the sloped curb is seamless and doesn't feel like I'm going to be thrown off. There is no suspension on the scooter though so a larger drop or continuous bumps is going to be felt eventually. Steering the scooter was extremely easy to get a hang of and as someone who hasn't rode a bike in years, riding the scooter seemed like second nature.

SPEED AND DISTANCE

For speed and distance, it gets up to its advertised 15.5mph speed really quickly and the motor doesn't hesitate at all. I am 160lbs for reference. I was able to get up the inclines in my neighborhood no problem which are moderately steep of 5-7 degrees. For distance I was able to get it to my point of public transit and back to my home easily (which is about 8km total) and still have half of the battery left.

SUGGESTIONS

If there were a few things I would like improved in the scooter, first the included instructions are wrong, it tells you to remove the hook that clips the scooter closed when its folded to install the handlebars. You do NOT need to do this. I got pretty stumped right there wondering why there wasn't an included Allen key to remove that hook. Second, the bell is a little loose so it dings quietly when you're riding on the sidewalk or bumps, I might want to put a piece of tape on it. Third it would have been nice if the handle bars could have folded too, my garage is really tight fit and foldable bars would have helped with the tight space

While those are suggestions for improvements, it doesn't take away the fact this is an excellent electric scooter for the money and now my days of being stuck in the parking lot of the transit station is now over.

I don't know how my review ended up in the Apex description. It was for the GXL v2 model?
Ok, first it takes a bit of getting used to. It's my first scooter, I expected more easy balancing than that but you have to get used to it gradually. You have to learn to position your body, feet, shift according to how you're moving, be careful about shifting feet position while moving, etc.
I'm 165 lbs and I could get it to 15.5 mph - edit: GPS measures say it is 13.3 mph - without any problem. But it does not exceed 15.5 mph. Even going downhill with the throttle. The new models are limited to that speed I read.
I was able to go up an overpass (150-200 meters of climb, at maybe 7° ? ), and at 13 mph at first and then gradually slowing to 11.4 mph. Not bad.
I only rode for 3 miles, and there were 3 bars out of 4 left. But when I plugged in the charger, the lights were green???? Hmm, can I trust this. (Edit: I unplugged the charger, and plugged it back, the lights are red).
I'll make a longer test, try to push it to the max and report here. Edit: I did a 6.6 miles test, held an average 10.1 mph, though traffic slowed me a while, I could have done 10.5 mph average I guess. Max speed 13.3 mph. All this calculated by GPS. There was one bar and a blinking 2nd bar, out of 4 left. 2.5 miles per bar?
However it's a sturdy scooter, the stem is hard, a bit massive, the wheels are tough and thick (pneumatic but tough), slimed (a puncture sealing substance) it seems. There's Locktite or something on the screws. A substance to secure screws.
All in all seems good for short - 10-12 miles - commutes. If you don't push the throttle to the maximum.
The plastic stuff (the latch for the stem when you fold it) seems a bit cheap.
The scooter is easy enough to lift but if you had to walk with it for several minutes you might find that hard. But the wheels roll easily so you can roll it while folded or opened.
Overall, besides the balancing issue at first, it's fun, and it makes getting around easy. Moving at 13 mph 60% of the time seems realistic-then it falls to 11. For me.

Was very simple in assembling. Looks quite solid. I am quite heavy guy (heavier than allowed in specification, around 125 kg), but scooter is still able to move me with 15 MPh speed and manages to run even in case of highly inclined parts of road.
Real riding distance for my weight and hilly area is around 10-12 km. Battery life indicator is not adequate. Scooter runs most of distance with 4 and 3 lines on the indicator. After it shows 2 lines, battery dies very quickly. 8.5 inches wheels are too small for poor Quebec roads. So if you don't have smooth roads, consider buying something with bigger wheels and shock absorbers.

I purchased this in March of 2022 with hopes of getting around the city conveniently. It has been nothing but a money pit. From the moment I got it, it's been one struggle after another. Within the first 2 weeks of riding, I immediately noticed it was falling apart. The tube in the backtire was completely burnt out (without that much riding to begin with) and oil was coming out of it. It's also very difficult to pump it. No air stays in. The battery died really fast. It only lasts an hour if you're lucky. And that's only at the beginning. After the first couple of weeks it only lasted 30 minutes. My commute is a 40 minute round trip and I couldn't get home without charging at work first.

For months I was dealing with the customer service trying to explain the situation. It's under warranty and I also purchased the extra extended warranty that covers even more. They wanted to do the bare minimum. They didn't want to help and stopped answering my emails. The ones it would take a week to reply to with nothing helpful. After threatening to write a review about it (which I've decided to do now anyway), they finally agreed to send a new one.

Same issue. Within 2 weeks my tires were flat, the back tube popped, battery died and oil was coming out. I just ride to work with it and sometimes the gym. I try not to go over the weight limit, but that's the closest I've gone to treating it "poorly." I live in the city so it's mostly flat paved surfaces. There are occasional pot holes I have to avoid, but that's everywhere. If I have to assume "there goes my tire again" each time I go over one, which is how it seems, I will never be able to ride it without constantly shelling out money into it. Like many of you, this seemed like a "cheaper" option for scooters with mostly positive reviews. Only after I purchased it, did I see the reviews elsewhere vouching for what i'm saying. Not enough about these issues were mentioned in other amazon reviews. Please beware if you decide to purchase. I wish someone told me it's not worth it and just better to suck it up and spend more on a better scooter. I've had to change the battery, back tube and both wheels on it and it's running much better. Clearly what was on both scooters originally were meant to come off. I will update this if anything else comes up. I'm now fearful of what's next and no one who buys this should have that feeling. Just not worth it.

I bought this scooter in May 2021, the battery life is amazing, and this scooter is very strong and reliable. My kids love it, it is very easy to handle. This scooter is worth every dollar!!!!!!

I broke my handle and even after two years, Go Trax shipped me a replacement handle in 3 days from the US, best and most pleasant customer service ever!!!!!!!!!

Also, my battery seems to not be full charging as I left the scooter in the garage during the winter (the cold kills batteries like any other batteries). Go Trax without any questions asked shipped me a free replacement battery pack. I love this brand and the customer service is excellent.
