The Canada Media Fund (CMF) is seeking a Research Analyst to join their Analytics and Strategic Insights team. Check out this opportunity!

Purpose of Position

The Research Analyst is responsible for supporting various Audience Research projects and deliverables. The Research Analyst does research and analysis to support the development and implementation of strategies for the CMF’s operations. This role requires a deep understanding of the media industry (including digital media), market trends, and audience behaviour.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Senior Manager and Senior Analyst to ensure accuracy of all data sets used in Performance Evaluation calculations, annual / program activity reports and other key data sets as identified
  • Conduct, synthesize and present research and analysis on the media industry, market trends, and audience behavior
  • Prepare reports and create data visualizations on audience media trends
  • Prepare all audience data for regular and ad hoc board, quarterly and annual reports
  • Work with the team to assess broadcasters’ consumption numbers to set their CMF allocations
  • Build rapport and buy-in with stakeholders regarding data and analysis of linear and digital media analytics
  • Handle ad hoc and scheduled requests from all departments, often with a quick turnaround
  • Attend working groups and conferences to learn from the industry and others
  • Assist the Audience Research team to define optimal criteria and metrics for assessing digital media usage, performance, and influence
  • Help the Audience Research team create new and better ways to measure audience behavior and satisfaction (ex. using census databases, qualitative methods, social media engagement research, sentiment analyses, etc.)
  • Maintain conversations with local and international funds, similar to the CMF, and workshop ideas with audience research analysts from other domestic funds and broadcasters
  • Be able to update and improve dashboards independently using PowerBI and produce informative data visualizations
  • Maintain a centralized list of CMF-funded titles available on third-party data suppliers (ex. Parrot, Tubular)
  • Be a representative of Audience Research, attending consultations, workshops, presentations and meetings; report findings back to managers and staff, inform colleagues of initiatives, deadlines and activities they could participate in, or anything relevant that may affect the CMF

WHO YOU ARE

Education

  • College Diploma or University Degree in business, communications, social sciences, media studies, or relevant discipline

Experience

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience working in a research capacity for a Canadian media outlet, broadcaster or a related entity
  • Experience in broadcast (TV), production, advertising, or digital media analytics especially in the French market is an asset

Knowledge

  • Solid understanding of audience measurement practices on both linear and non-linear platforms
  • Strong analytical skills, critical thinking, time management and resourcefulness.
  • Experience in sentiment, impact analysis and creating visualizations
  • Good knowledge of broadcast industry infrastructure as well as related issues
  • In-depth knowledge of the Canadian long-form content ecosystem, as well as an awareness of general media, web, mobile and social media trends
  • Adept at interpreting complex data and contextualizing trends within policy and stakeholder frameworks
  • Understanding of the nuances and sensitivity required when developing and executing policy in a political environment
  • Excellent communication skills, written and oral, especially for the presentation of research findings
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Initiative, creativity, and curiosity. Demonstrated experience building innovative reports.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office is essential
  • Fluency in data analysis software packages such as SQL, PowerBI, Tableau, Infosys, Canadian Census data is desirable
  • Bilingualism (English and French) is recommended
