Pollen season is in full swing, and the Unilabs team in Sweden is supporting a national programme of pollen level monitoring to help communities stay informed.    This World Allergy Day, we caught up with Susanne Fröjdendal at Unilabs' microbiology lab in Mälarsjukhuset, Eskilstuna to learn about the sophisticated pollen trap she overseas at one of the 22 pollen stations across Sweden. Mimicking human breathing, it captures and analyses the air's pollen content providing data to produce a pollen forecast, factoring weather patterns and flowering progress.    "Predicting future changes in pollen patterns is a complex task that involves multiple factors." says Fröjdendal. "We can see that the amount of pollen has increased by 10-20%, which puts a higher burden on people with allergies. We continuously monitor and collect data on pollen levels, so we can help anticipate changes and inform the public in a timely manner.” Learn more in our latest interview: https://lnkd.in/etNWSEki    #WorldAllergyDay #HealthCare #Research #Environment

Sarcomas, a diverse group of malignancies with over 50 subtypes, require specialised expertise for accurate diagnosis and treatment. Often evading early detection due to their rarity and varied presentation, understanding them demands deep knowledge and extensive experience. This Sarcoma Awareness Month, we interviewed Unilabs sarcoma imaging expert Dr Björn Jobke to discuss the role of advanced imaging techniques in diagnosis, and the importance of a multimodal treatment approach to avoid unnecessary invasive procedures.   "I remember a case from my time as a resident in Bone Pathology when we received a resected femoral head (the ‘ball’ at the top of the thigh bone) from a younger patient with uncontrollable hip pain," says Dr Jobke. "After a thorough investigation of the specimen, the patient turned out to have a tiny (3mm) benign tumour, known to cause severe pain. If identified earlier with dedicated imaging review and expertise, the patient could have avoided a hip replacement which is a life-changing, invasive procedure and been treated definitively with a minimally invasive technique.”   Learn more about sarcoma types, the diagnosis approach and developments in sarcoma radiology and care: https://lnkd.in/eJurWffP #Diagnostics #Cancer #Healthcare

Unilabs aims to be at the forefront of pioneering research to improve millions of lives. That's why we've published a paper focused on lung cancer care in Portugal.     Our team conducted a meticulous analysis of lung cancer patient pathways within the Portuguese healthcare system. Through rigorous examination, we identified several areas  for enhancement and developed comprehensive proposals to address them including: 1️⃣ Advocating for and raising awareness of a national lung cancer screening programme ). 2️⃣ Improving the effectiveness of such a programme by defining the target population. 3️⃣ Expanding the pool of professionals proficient in conducting and interpreting low-dose CT scans.    By disseminating our findings and recommendations, we aim to contribute to the momentum towards improved screening practices and, ultimately, enhanced patient outcomes. Leveraging our expertise in imaging, pathology, and molecular pathology services. Thank you to our colleagues Raquel Ramos, Conceicao Souto Moura, Mariana Costa, Nuno Jorge Lamas, Renato Correia, Diogo Garcez Gonçalves, José Miguel Pereira, and Carlos Rafael Sousa, for contributing their expertise to this paper and supporting this crucial research. Their expertise has been instrumental in shaping recommendations aimed at elevating standards of patient care.
