Shaniya combines two different campus jobs, at the Writing Workshop and Assessment Lab, to gain simultaneous experience both in mentoring and research.

In what ways has your campus job contributed to your personal, academic, or professional growth and aspirations?

Through working at the Writing Workshop, the way I approach the writing process. I approach essays in a more formulaic method with different drafts and play around with words to have the maximum desired effects for readers. As for the Assessment Lab, I really enjoy the process of researching, coding, and transcribing for our different projects which make me want to go into a field where I can work on various ones at once. This year specifically with our research with AI usage on campus inspires me to continue exploring my own relationship with generative AI and go into a field where I can impact creative protections.

Can you share any memorable experiences or achievements from your campus employment journey?

Honestly my favorite part of working is seeing how others start to believe in themselves. Like a lot of people, my mentees come in with hesitant about their writing and not feeling confident. Throughout the semester while working on the areas they believe they struggle with, they take the strategies that are new to them and are able to start the process on their own and don’t feel as anxious as they did in the beginning when we met. I always tell them writing is a process that will never finish—it’s always about getting to the point where you feel confident.

Give your campus job supervisor(s) a shout out – what did you love about their mentorship?

Professor Silber and Rachael—you guys are so great! Both of you have been so kind, understanding, and such a genuine joy to be around throughout the years! Rachael, thank you for taking a chance on me my freshman year and being so supportive in all my endeavors.
