Student Employees

Wesleyan student employees play a vital role in facilitating the day-to-day administrative and academic operations of the University, helping to advance our mission with talent, resourcefulness, and passion.

The Gordon Career Center facilitates on- and off-campus employment opportunities for Wesleyan students year-round. There is a wide breadth of opportunities for you to work on-campus in academic departments, research centers, administrative offices, dining facilities, art galleries, libraries, in the local community, and more.

Campus jobs can form an integral part of your career development and prepare you for the competitive job markets of today.

All hourly campus-based employment opportunities are posted on Handshake, Wesleyan’s career management platform and job board for undergraduates, graduates, and alumni.

Students must be enrolled in a degree-seeking program full-time at Wesleyan University in order to qualify for campus jobs. Both undergraduate and graduate students may work on-campus.

Work-study award is not required to work on campus.

Learn more about campus job eligibility by visiting the Campus Employment Frequently Asked Questions.

Students of all backgrounds and statuses are welcome to explore on-campus work opportunities. Please be advised that it’s important not to disclose personal information related to your citizenship status in written communications. To learn more about on-campus employment for international students, visit the Office of International Student Affairs webpage. Feel free to reach out via email (campusemployment@wesleyan.edu) or schedule an appointment for additional information.

Congratulations on being hired for a campus job! After you are hired, but before you start working, you must complete your payroll on-boarding forms on Workday and present the original copies of your physical IDs to Human Resources for I-9 verification. Login to Workday with your wesleyan.edu email address and select “My Tasks” to get started.

Within 3 business days of your start date, you must complete your W-4 and I-9 forms and book an appointment with HR to verify your IDs. Schedule a time to present the original, hard copies of their identification documents in person to Human Resources via this Bookings page.

See this list for acceptable identification documents.

You may not begin working until these steps are completed. This is required by federal law. Failure to complete your I-9 form and verify your IDs with Human Resources in person will result in automatic termination from the position.

It is the combined responsibility of the student and supervisor to ensure that the student has completed the necessary paperwork and I-9 verification before a student works any hours.

The work-study program assists students with the cost of their college education by providing a subsidy to employers to support and expand part-time student employment opportunities. Eligibility for federal or institutional work-study is determined by a family’s financial need, as demonstrated by completing a financial aid application.

Work-study can be applied to any on-campus job. Work-study eligible students must seek out and apply for jobs, and positions are not assigned nor guaranteed. Rather, we provide students with the tools and guidance to find and secure opportunities that are a fit for their skills, interests, and availability. Campus employers may indicate preferences for specific skills and qualifications, including work-study eligibility. However, students may apply to any open position regardless of whether or not they meet the employer’s preferences.

To learn more about work-study, see The Financial Aid Office’s Frequently Asked Questions and Campus Employment’s Frequently Asked Questions.

If you have questions about your work-study eligibility or allotment, email finaid@wesleyan.edu.

The Campus Employment team (campusemployment@wesleyan.edu) is available to support students with navigating conflicts during their job search and during their campus employment, including facilitating dialogues and advocating for their labor rights. We can meet with individual students, as well as mediate conversations between student employees or the student employee and their supervisor.

Additional resources include:

Student Ombuds – Each Student Ombud serves as a neutral and confidential* peer resource focused on empowering students to successfully navigate the institution and advocate for themselves in moments of conflict, particularly when there are power dynamic considerations. Reach out to the Student Ombuds via studentombud@wesleyan.edu, or the program manager Dr. April Ruiz, Dean for Academic Equity, Inclusion, & Success at aruiz01@wesleyan.edu.

The Office of Equity & Inclusion In cases of discrimination, harassment, and sexual misconduct, The Office of Equity & Inclusion is available to offer support, discuss situations, and provide resources/options. Reach out to Debbie Colucci, Wesleyan’s Assistant Vice President for Equity & Inclusion / Title IX Coordinator, at dcolucci@wesleyan.edu.

Counseling and Psychological Services – CAPS offers confidential* psychotherapy services where students may discuss worries, distressing feelings, or difficult situations they are currently experiencing. Individual counseling and group counseling are available. For urgent matters, same-day crisis appointments can be scheduled by calling 860-685-2910.

Class Deans – The Class Deans are available to advise students and help facilitate students’ access to academic and non-academic support services. They work with faculty and staff to support student success. Visit the Class Deans page to contact your respective Class Dean.

Accessibility Services – Students with documented learning, physical, sensory, health, or psychiatric disabilities are able to request reasonable accommodations through Accessibility Services. Students who have, or suspect they may have, a disability for which they would like to request accommodations, should contact Accessibility Services at accessibility@wesleyan.edu to discuss their needs.

*Note: The confidential resources listed above have exceptions to confidentiality if students are considered at imminent risk of harm to either themselves or another person. Read more about the exceptions to confidentiality on their respective websites.

About the Campus Employment Team

We support student employees by ensuring equitable hiring practices and providing guidance to undergraduate students as they search for and work in campus jobs. We work closely with faculty and staff to facilitate student hiring and support their supervision of student employees. We educate the Wesleyan community about polices related to student employment at the institutional, state, and federal levels. We do not supervise campus employers and make no representations or guarantees about positions posted on Handshake. We encourage student employees and campus employers alike to research the integrity of each position’s employment practices and reach out to us for support, campusemployment@wesleyan.edu.
