Our plans leading up to Global Accessibility Awareness Day 2024

On this year’s Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) Can I Play That will be presenting the AbilityPoints Diamond Award 2023. Like last year, leading up to this day we will have daily content sharing our editor’s favorites, Barrier Breaker awards, and finally the Diamond Award. Catch up on last year’s posts in our Editor’s Choices and Awards category.

Awards and Editor’s Choices

We will publish an Editors Choice daily starting tomorrow. Each is written by one of our staff to highlight their favorite game of 2023. Accessibility is not a requirement for these choices, but because of what we need to be able to play, most of the games have done well in some accessibility aspects.

After the Editor’s Choices, we will present the Barrier Breakers. These Barrier Breakers are awarded to studios for outstanding implementation of individual accessibility features. These are features we would like to see become industry standard, or those that raise the bar for that feature.

On GAAD itself, we will present the AbilityPoints Diamond Award 2023. This accessibility award celebrates the best accessible game of that year. Of course this may not necessarily be the most accessible game for every player. But it is the one that best meets or exceeds an exceptional level of accessibility.

About AbilityPoints

Previously known as DAGERSystem, AbilityPoints is the parent organization of Can I Play That. Thay started as a site focused on holistic games journalism through the lens of game accessibility in 2012, and turned into a 501(c)3 nonprofit in 2018. With the goals of educating, empowering, and employing disabled gamers in the field of game accessibility, Can I Play That fits seamlessly in that mission.

About Global Accessibility Awareness Day

Global Accessibility Awareness Day is an awareness day focusing on digital accessibility and inclusion for disabled people. GAAD happens every year on the third Thursday of May, this year on May 16. It is usually a day to advocate for and promote accessibility efforts in many fields. You can count on us to report on news related to gaming leading up to and after GAAD 2024.
