Today marks 14 years since my self-employment journey began in the digital and tech space. Starting as a web development company in Vancouver in 2010, I soon discovered the fascinating world of UX. This set of principles not only transformed my business but also ignited a passion for creating seamless user and customer experiences. Now, with a wealth of experience in UX, product and digital strategy, I am excited about a change of direction. As many of you know, my passion lies in transport, particulary aviation, and the built environment so these are the industries where I am concentrating my search for an incredible role. #DigitalStrategy #aviation #airlines #airportdesign #careerchange #paxex #builtenvironment

We love seeing wins from people in our awesome community, such as Erin from from Toronto, who got hired as a Senior Product Designer at a healthcare company 🎉 Erin had been applying for jobs for 7 months without getting interviews and offers before joining Career Strategy Lab. Here's what she said about her experience ... "The 7 months before I joined CSL were lonely, and my confidence was low after getting some traction here and there but never getting farther along with multiple companies. I joined so I could learn and rebuild assets like my CV and LinkedIn profile and activity. Ultimately, the critiques and the mindset calls convinced me to take the jump and join. I only wish I had taken that jump sooner! Everything that the amazing CSL people said was true: trust in your experience and your abilities, trust the process, and lean on them wherever you need them." 🤔 ➡️ Feel like you're in Erin's shoes – applying for roles, not getting interviews, and unsure how to break this cycle? Here are 3 ways we can help: 1) Check out everything you get in our 3-month UX career coaching program: https://lnkd.in/gZXZp6g2 2) Get our UX career coaching syllabus: https://lnkd.in/g6dJfYgn 3) Or if you prefer to talk to a human to ask questions about Career Strategy Lab, send us a DM here on LinkedIn or book a call here: https://lnkd.in/gSAV7QEV #uxdesign #uxresearch #productstrategy #uxcontent #uxwriting

A few days ago, I came to a realization: I am not just building side projects; I am creating a portfolio of software products aligned with my interests and skills. Over the past year, I have developed: ✨ MapleStack: A job board for tech jobs in Canada ✨ SpellCheckMySite: A tool to check spelling mistakes on websites ✨ FindChildCare.ca: A directory of child care providers in Canada And now, I'm working on something new - this one a bit more involved than the others (announcement coming soon!). It has made me realize that each project isn't just a standalone creation, but a step in my journey as a builder and problem-solver. It's exciting to see how each project informs and inspires the next. This isn't just a collection of work - it's an evolving body of ideas and solutions.

Hey everyone, I have been lurking here in the comments since I started my current position. Before that I was actively freelancing and relatively heavy into sharing some Shopify updates. Helping raise 2 toddler girls among some other things has not really allowed for extra time investment elsewhere without sacrificing time with my family. That said, I believe I may have some extra time on my hands soon to dedicate back to my love for web development and Shopify's mission of making commerce better for everyone! I intend to attend the upcoming Editions.dev event next Tuesday hosted by Shopify!! I also plan on sharing some more things I have been slowly working on soon alongside all the Shopify greatness I'll learn at the event! If you want to connect at the event just let me know! I plan to attend the freelancer breakfast to hopefully meet some of the awesome folks I used to communicate with frequently! Also if you are curious about any recent or upcoming Shopify updates let me know in the comments and I'll try to reply with some insight!

So late to the post, but ICYMI, we launched some stuff at #Config2024 last week. We've been cooking up a lot on our pillar — going from building Figma's second product (FigJam), to dreaming up its third, Figma Slides. Here's what we announced: Figma Slides: I'm especially proud of the designers on the team: Keeyen Yeo Khalil Cader Jakub S Ryan Reid Natasha T. Kylie To. For always asking "what if?" even though slides are a file format as old as time, for dreaming up new ways to interact with AI, for sweating the details on a tool that balances the needs of designers and everyone else alike. Try it out → https://lnkd.in/e_R6Pi_v FigJam Pages: We brought a fan fave Figma feature to FigJam! Big ups to rocky chen ✌️for striving pixel-perfection on this one → figjam.new

Wish your startup could ship even just 15% faster? Now imagine 50%. Design systems are for enabling just that and more. At Jasper, we surveyed our engineers after we migrated over to our new design system (from essentially not having one). We asked how it has affected their velocities—obvi, see the results below. My team's estimation was for a 20-30% increase, so seeing an AT MINIMUM 50% INCREASE in our initial results made more than a few scratch their heads in why we didn't do this sooner. Even if you're a team of 3, you need to have the foundations of a design system in mind from day 0. Consider your startup's trajectory if you could be shipping even 15% faster from day 0. I also happen to be available to join a team in need for what i'm saying and bring the same successes we had at Jasper. HMU. If you or your leadership still has hangups, here is a fun and quick read by Ana Boyer on some of the myth you might be holding onto. https://lnkd.in/gE74Qjgx

"Accessibility isn't just a choice; it's a daily challenge that requires action." Last month, I had the opportunity to interview Sally McGrath, the Director of Programme at CodeYourFuture, and wrote about her story with accessibility, which I shared with the audiences of A11y新手村, a Taiwan-based platform focusing on software accessible design. Sally is a developer and educator who has initiated numerous projects related to accessible digital products and advocates for the importance of accessibility within the organisation. Her story has taught me that accessibility isn't just about words; it requires action. We should make accessibility a core principle rather than a task to be done 'when there's time'. Special thanks to Sally for taking the time to share her story with us, and to Yi Luo for giving us permission to reference her article from her past interview with Sally. Note: The article is written in traditional Chinese for the community's audience. Please DM if you'd like to know more details. If there's sufficient interest, we would consider translating it into English. 🙌 #A11y

While I am excited for the release of Bubble's Native editor later this year, here are some thoughts to sober you up if you've had too much of the "I've got the next unicorn idea" punch 🍹 I have faith in Bubble's engineering and product team, but if you think it will be easy to inject your web app or idea into the native space, you might be miscalculating: 1) When Bubble released the beta version of their responsive engine a few years back, there was a good six months of bug fixes and tweaks. Since native capability requires a different editor and code stack compared to web apps, I think this release is even more significant. 2) FlutterFlow has been dedicated to creating a platform for no-code native apps since 2020. They're constantly updating and refining (I think I had to update my desktop app 3-4 times in the past month) based on user needs and native store requirements (iOS/Android changes). iOS typically presents more hurdles than Android. Could this be because the underlying code is Flutter, and Bubble is going a different route that is more efficient? Is coding for iOS just that complex? I guess we'll see. 3) Will plugins save the day for capabilities not available as they do in the web app editor? I wanted to integrate OneSignal to send push notifications in my FlutterFlow project...if this were a web app, someone would have already integrated a popular service like OneSignal, and there'd be a plugin for that! Well, no – in FF, it sent me on a 3-week tangent which required custom code, pushing the code to GitHub, synchronizing and making changes in Xcode, back to GH, deploy to the app store. I think there may be hurdles for a while, requiring traditional code for particular features. 4) We're so used to building, testing, and immediately launching a web app to production - this won't be the case with native apps. There is a gatekeeper layer called Apple and Google which mandates certain requirements to get an app to production. To summarize: - There will be a lengthy beta period. - Updates and refinements will be ongoing. - Custom code may be required for many services/features we're used to having plugins for. - Besides learning the new editor, devs will also need to learn the Apple and Android deployment protocols. I hope I eat my words, but I'm setting my horizon to 12 months + past the beta release. What do you think? #nocode #nativeapps #iOS #android Alchemy Apps #softwaredevelopment

🚀 Exciting News! I've just completed a TypeScript implementation of the LLMSherpa client, originally a Python-only tool. This new implementation brings powerful file parsing capabilities right into the TypeScript ecosystem, enabling developers to handle multiple file formats like DOCX, PPTX, HTML, and more with ease using the powerful nlmatics/nlm-ingestor. 📑 Key features include robust PDF parsing with LayoutPDFReader, which preserves crucial layout information often lost with other tools. Whether it's extracting sections, paragraphs, tables, or even handling OCR tasks, this tool is set to revolutionize how we process complex documents in TypeScript environments. 🔗 Check out the project here: https://lnkd.in/gTB5Gges Feel free to connect and discuss how this can be integrated into your projects or if you have feedback or features you'd like to see! #TypeScript #LLMSherpa #OpenSource #DeveloperTools

SmartPass
Hey everyone, I'm Ivy Tsang, Product Designer at SmartPass here to share one of our latest (and one of my favorite) feature updates – 𝐎𝐧𝐞-𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝐏𝐚𝐬𝐬 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐥 🎉 As the design + product lead, I focused on understanding the critical information teachers need to take action on student pass requests. Teachers often juggle numerous tasks at once, and we saw how overwhelming it can be to handle multiple pass requests from students. I collaborated with my team to translate this into the most efficient, easy to use, and intuitive experience for teachers. With our latest update, we’ve made it easier than ever for teachers to manage pass requests smoothly. 𝐍𝐨 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠! Teachers can now respond to pass requests with a single tap. For overwhelming days, this feature lets teachers see student messages on a single hover to avoid the need to click into each pass to approve or deny. This update focuses all on making SmartPass easy to use and saving time for our hardworking teachers. We couldn't have done this without feedback from our incredible community of schools, who ensure we build what truly matters to teachers. 💚 #productdesign #teachers #schools

Fascinating to see how Figma scales its database 🐘 Just 4 years ago, they were proud to fit all their data into a single database on the most powerful machine in AWS, and have since grown 100-fold. Firstly, it's great to read about the inner workings of a service you use almost daily. Secondly, in 'internet-scale' companies, I think there's a dominance of MySQL, so it's refreshing to see serious Postgres installations being shared, which is my preferred choice and that of most of my acquaintances. As a seasoned developer, I'm always excited to learn from others' experiences and share my knowledge. What's your favorite Postgres war story? Share your most epic database scaling victories (or failures!) in the comments below! https://lnkd.in/ddVAxCZH

Thank you, Tech Thursday, for the opportunity to be part of the UI best practices discussion last night! A big shout out to our moderator, Ryan FitzGerald, and co-panellists, Richard Bennett and Albert C Jame, for the engaging conversation. Key takeaways from the discussion: • If you want to embed design best practices in your company culture, hire a design leader for your senior leadership team. • Create a design standards and principles document to promote best practices and ethical design. • Follow accepted mental maps but encourage creativity and innovation whenever it's appropriate. Some "Don'ts": • If you want to innovate, STOP using Material Design for your UI framework. • Avoid "gamifying" products unless you're actually creating a game – instead, personalize products using available technologies. • Refrain from asking product designers to "make it pretty." • Can we all agree to drop the "UI" – it's just UX or Product design. #UX #ProductDesign

"In the US, while the average millennial had 30 per cent less wealth than the average boomer by age 35, the richest 10 per cent of the cohort are now about 20 per cent wealthier than their boomer counterparts were at the same age, according to a recent study by researchers in Cambridge, Berlin and Paris. Not all millennials are created equal." "Research from property broker Redfin in February showed that 36 per cent of young Americans had financial help from family when buying their first home. Seemingly, home ownership in the US is becoming increasingly hereditary, just as it is in Britain. Bee Boileau and David Sturrock at the Institute for Fiscal Studies found that more than a third of young UK homeowners received help from family. Even among those getting assistance there are huge disparities, with the most fortunate 10th each receiving £170,000, compared with the average gift of £25,000." "One can hardly blame parents for helping their offspring, or children for accepting assistance, but the growing role of such transfers in determining millennial wealth trajectories is likely to have significant social and political fallout." #inequalities #millennials #ecomomy

Customers like Lyft and Figma partner with Byteboard on our quest to move away from theoretical, unrealistic styles of interviewing into more skills-based, project-based interviews. The result? Higher quality hires and a better candidate experience (true story: one candidate called the interview 'relaxing') 😌 It's a win-win for customers and candidates 🏆 Hear more from our CEO, Sargun Kaur. #technicalhiring #technicalinterviews #skillsbasedhiring

🚀 Day 4/10 of University of Waterloo's MDEI Design Sprint ✅ Today marked significant progress in our journey to transform CIBC's app by integrating user-centric gamification strategies for self-servicing: ✅ Strategic Meeting with Lennart Nacke: With only 1 day allocated for testing tomorrow, we optimized our research strategy and validated our gamification assumptions with UX and gamification expert, Lennart. His insights were instrumental as we refined our approach; focusing on user needs and clarifying our messaging around gamification.* ✅ Mid-Fi Prototype Development: We've developed a robust mid-fi prototype featuring over 10 screens, aiming to enhance user engagement through gamification - designed to make digital banking more intuitive and rewarding. I tested the flows and updated interactions as needed to ensure a smooth experience for users during testing. ✅ Usability Testing Plan: I setup our testing on two critical scenarios, enrolling and learning. While we could test for many more, I think it's important to understand that not everything's a priority! 🛠 Tools of the Trade: To save time on the tedious task of building out a Google Form, I leveraged OpenAI to convert our testing plan in Word into a script. I then ran the script to create a form in seconds that will help us to track results - saving us valuable time for more important tasks like focusing on the questions and design. *Key learning: Don't know? Ask! ⏭ Next Steps: Prototype testing, data analysis, and preparing for stakeholder check-ins with our CIBC mentors Lyndon Pan and Himanshi Sharma. 🙌 Stay tuned as Andre De Jesus, Elijah Robert, Megan Dufton, Mukul T., Samaia Aidroos and I continue to innovate and refine our approach to digital banking! #DesignSprint #DigitalBanking #UserExperience #Gamification #ProductManagement #ProductDesign #CareerGrowth
