Wow – what an extraordinary week in Toronto! 🇨🇦
After a thrilling week in Brussels for the IAPP - International Association of Privacy Professionals #AIGG24, I had the privilege of attending the Canada Privacy Symposium in my hometown.
#CPS24 was packed with insightful regulatory updates, including a surprise announcement by Canadian Privacy Commissioner Philippe Dufresne during his keynote, who revealed a joint investigation with the Information Commissioner's Office into 23andMe.
Attendees also benefitted from a wealth of practical insight, with experts like Saima Fancy and R. Jason Cronk sharing advanced strategies for operationalizing data minimization by reducing accessibility and observability. 👀
And in between sessions, I had the honor of putting Michael Harvey, the new Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia, and Adam Higgins, CPO at Equifax, in the "On Trend With Transcend” hot seat 🔥 (#OTWT episodes coming soon!).
To top off a fantastic conference, I had the pleasure of attending the inaugural #PICASSOAwardsCanada24 gala, organized by the incredible Lauren Reid at The Privacy Pro. It was an honor to be her guest at an event featuring the elite of the Canadian privacy industry, and witnessing my friend Ann Cavoukian, Ph.D. receive the Privacy Award for Achievement for her pioneering work, including the creation of the #PbD principles, was the evening's highlight. 👏🏽
I also connected with a few rising stars 🌟 in the privacy world like Maverick James, Esq., CIPP/US, CIPM, Diana Rosemberg, CIPM, and Melanie Selvadurai, MBA, CIPM, CIPP/C, and had the chance to reconnect with my wonderful friend Brandon Kerstens, DPO at Match Group (my partner in crime when I led privacy at Tinder), and my dear friends Jordan Prokopy and Sylvia Klasovec (Kingsmill) BA, LLB, two incredible women I've known my entire career in #privacy, and who now lead national privacy practices at 2 of the big 4.
Finally, it was so great to spend some time "field tripping" with Deborah Evans, CPO at Rogers Communications, one of Canada's largest telecos, Rian Kinney, Corporate Privacy Counsel at Great HealthWorks, Sharon Mosconi, DPO at LexisNexis, and Veronica S., DPO at ExxonMobil. Getting to hear their professional journeys and insights into operationalizing privacy amidst evolving regulations was truly inspiring. 😎
As I board the red-eye back to #Brussels for more meetings at the European Commission, I carry with me the invigorating energy and invaluable experiences from this remarkable week in Canada. À bientôt! 🍁
