🤯 Can you believe only 17% of Gen Z have been taught about trade school? We have a problem. There’s a labor shortage across the trades, homes are aging and needing repair, but Gen Z isn’t choosing blue-collar careers at a fast enough rate. Why? According to The 2024 Annual Blue Collar Report, their parents, schools, and the media they consume aren’t talking about all the opportunities offered by blue-collar careers. For those with ambition and a strong work ethic there is abundant opportunity and prosperity to be found in the trades! We hope you’ll check out the report through the link in the comments and help us show Gen Z why they should choose blue-collar using #BlueCollarBuilt on social—tag Jobber and we’ll repost!

What’s your #BlueCollarBuilt story? We need more young people to choose the trades, so let’s get loud about the many professional, financial, and societal upsides! According to The 2024 Annual Blue Collar Report, Gen Z’s parents, schools, and the media they consume aren’t talking about all the opportunities offered by blue-collar careers. In fact, only 17% of Gen Z were taught about trade school in high school 🤯 Check out the full report through the link in the comments and help us show Gen Z why they should choose blue-collar using #BlueCollarBuilt on social—tag Jobber and we’ll repost! #bluecollar #tradeschool

    CEO @ Jobber

It's 100 degrees, your AC is broken, and there's no one to fix it. Your roof springs a leak, you've got buckets all over the floor catching water, and there's no one to fix it. Your kitchen sink is backed up with smelly gross dish water and whatever else was in the drain, and... you guessed it, there's no one to fix it. If you've tried to hire a trades person in recent years you know it's a struggle, but Jobber is sounding the alarm that this situation could get a lot worse. The average home in the US is now over 40 year old, which means stuff is starting to break. At the same time, the current blue-collar workforce is retiring at an accelerated rate, and not enough young people are coming into the trades to take their place. This is a recipe for disaster, but also the opportunity of a generation. How did we get here? Parents, teachers, and other influences have spent the past decades convincing young people that blue collar work is less valuable or respectable than white collar work. The 2024 Annual Blue-Collar Report reveals that 76% of Gen Z feel there's a stigma attached to the idea of pursuing trade or vocation school as opposed to college or university. But Gen Z wants exactly what the trades have to offer: Job stability, earning potential, independence and the opportunity to work for themselves. We have to make more noise about how these essential blue collar professions actually check the boxes, and ditch the tired elitist attitude that they're for the uneducated, or the unambitious. In my experience, the opposite is very often the case. The most inspiring, ambitious, clever, resourceful people I know are small business owners. I hope that next year, the 2025 report shows the stigma about young people pursuing the trades is on the decline. I want to see more of Gen Z following in the footsteps of ambitious people like Terrence Chan, owner of Impetus Plumbing and Heating, and you should too! "I became a plumber at 20 and have since started a business earning more than $1M in revenue annually. I learned about the trade early on and my parents encouraged me to pursue it. I wish more parents understood how valuable a career in the trades can be and encouraged their children to explore it." Jobber is committed to helping bring more attention to the trades, and better connect this generation of young people to the incredible opportunities they have to offer. Check out the 2024 Blue-Collar Report and help us raise awareness by sharing it around!

Thank you Annabel Burba at Inc. Magazine for featuring The Annual Blue-Collar Report in your piece highlighting the worries Gen Zs face around AI taking over white-collar jobs. As our CEO and co-founder Sam Pillar explains, young people concerned about AI should consider blue-collar work instead, as skilled workers are less vulnerable to being replaced by the technology. In fact, AI will benefit those who want to create small businesses in those industries because the technology will democratize access to entrepreneurship. More than half of Gen Z is worried about AI replacing white-collar jobs 🤖 However, demand for the trades, for skilled human hands to wield tools and build, fix, maintain our homes and the infrastructure around us isn’t going anywhere! For The 2024 Annual Blue-Collar Report we surveyed 1,000 Gen Z to ask them about their understanding of trades careers and to find out what it would take for them to choose blue-collar. Their answers were eye-opening! Thank you Suzanne Blake at Newsweek for featuring The 2024 Annual Blue-Collar Report in your piece highlighting how Hollywood is doing blue-collar work dirty. 76% of Gen Z said there’s a stigma associated with going to a vocational school over a traditional four-year university—up two points from 2023. While the media isn't solely responsible for driving the stigma surrounding blue-collar work, they are contributing to it. 👉 35% of Gen Z say television shows and movies have influenced the careers they want to explore. 👉 47% say that trades professionals are generally portrayed negatively (including incompetent, unhealthy, and/or unhappy) in shows and movies. Here's how people working in TV, film, and journalism can help stop the stigma around blue-collar work and connect Gen Z with the trades: 👉 Advocate for accurate depictions of tradespeople in film, TV, and in journalism by showcasing their experiences and supporting creators who challenge stereotypes. 👉 Support advocacy and awareness campaigns aimed at highlighting opportunities for blue-collar workers and pressuring policymakers. https://lnkd.in/g-KUFRgn #BlueCollarBuilt
