This historical backdrop underscores the enduring challenge of harmonizing health protection measures with the imperatives of international trade within the Dutch maritime empire. Second presentation is by Merten Nefs discussing the comprehensive exploration of the exponential growth of XXL distribution centers in the Netherlands, shedding light on the complex interplay between historical, economic, and institutional dynamics while advocating for a new logistics policy narrative grounded in contemporary realities and sustainable development goals. Proudly presented to the transport community the outputs of FrontierInnovations work in the framework of the FRONTIER EU Project in the context of the Transport Research Arena (TRA) at #Dublin. Our work includes the dashboard enabling collaboration of multiple stakeholders as part of network and traffic management, the mobility hub allowing integration of the dashboard with other tools of the FRONTIER platform and external services, as well as the Cinynaut mobile app enabling travellers to interact with the FRONTIER platform, declare network events and receive information regarding response plans as they evolve on the network. 📣#Announcement Collaboration Between TU Delft Library and ICT for the New Repository Last week marked a significant milestone at TU Delft, as the ICT department and TU Delft Library signed a Service Level Agreement (SLA) aimed at enhancing the management and service delivery of the TU Delft Repository. This strategic document clarifies collaboration frameworks, service interruption management, and future feature planning, ensuring improved service quality and longevity for the repository. The SLA represents a pivotal step in formalising collaboration between ICT and the Library, underpinning their joint commitment to excellence in academic resource management. The culmination of this collaboration resulted in the successful launch of the new Repository on 2nd July! This comprehensive online platform provides access to a wide array of outputs created or managed by TU Delft, including research articles, theses, conference papers, and educational materials spanning from the 1860s to the present. Developed entirely at TU Delft using open-source languages, the new Repository replaces an older version and integrates advanced functionalities to enhance search speed, content discoverability, and provide valuable insights for faculty. Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, TU Delft Urban river spaces are increasingly acknowledged as vital green-blue corridors and public spaces. While embracing this trend, spatial designers, planners and decision-makers face the challenge of capturing the specificities and complexities of riverside urban areas. An essential part of that challenge is how boundaries are drawn, as the resulting spatial units of analysis and decision-making can have a considerable impact on the sustainability of urban riverspace transformations. CRiSp (City River Spaces) is an open-source software that automates the process of spatial delineation, and leverages spatial-temporal big data for scalable analysis, and thereby enable new research avenues such as global cross-case analyses.   We are eagerly looking forward to join us in this monthly meeting at the BK building or Online! Today, KU Leuven M-Group PhD researcher Louis Carpentier at KU Leuven Brugge will present his work on pattern-based time series segmentation at the #SIAM International Conference on Data Mining in #Houston. Time series semantic segmentation is the task of extracting time intervals from the time series data that share a similar meaning within the application domain in an unsupervised manner. State-of-the-art algorithms typically treat this problem as change point detection, resulting in discrete state transitions. However, in #real-world applications, states often transition gradually. This novel approach that Louis will present, called PaTSS, is the first that is able to deal with gradual state transitions between different operating contexts, which are often present in real-world sensor data. Together with Rudy Pei, Sasskia Brüers Freyssinet, Douglas McLelland and Olivier Coenen from BrainChip , we participated and reached🥉 in the "Event-Based Eye Tracking Challenge hosted at the AI for Streaming Workshop CVPR 2024" (https://lnkd.in/ePx_Uw8T) 👁 🎉 Our solution to detect pupil position in real-time from an event-camera, is innovative and effective, while remaining deceptively simple. To sum it up: it's a relatively standard deep learning architecture, with a 3D (hence the “spatiotemporal") convolution used during training, which can be transformed at inference into a 2D convolution to be "slid" over the temporal dimension as the data streams. This technique allows to create a model that predicts pupil position very accurately, while being tiny in terms of number of parameters (here we're talking about 800k parameters, far from the billions of LLMs). If you add to this a processor that will be able to take advantage of the data being sparse (such as BrainChip 's Akida for example), then you have an effective and very energy-efficient solution for this use case. As automated vehicle testing progresses in Europe, particularly in Belgium, there is a growing focus on the necessary infrastructure. However, pavement design adjustments remain underexplored. Our latest studies addresses this gap, providing a foundation for preparing pavements to accommodate automated vehicles effectively. In this regard, I am pleased to share the release of our 4th journal paper in the series of studies on the impact of automated vehicles on pavement rutting and fatigue performance (Please check it here: https://lnkd.in/dueiS8ZC). I'm eager to collaborate with like-minded professionals and organizations passionate about advancing this crucial aspect of AV infrastructure. We had an amazing time at our recent FME Inspiration Day events in both Wavre and Leuven! One of the highlights was a unique game designed by SpelOntwerp.be.  We applied the principles of FME transformers to create a word transformation game, and it was a huge hit with everyone who participated! 🧩 The game brilliantly showcased the power of FME by transforming words, just like how FME's transformers can convert and integrate different data formats.   Participants loved the challenge of applying data transformation logic to solve word puzzles. It made learning about FME fun and interactive. WEBINAR: Is Belgium operating within its safe operating space? 11 June from 14h - 15h30 This webinar will discuss the first phase of CERAC's first project defining global planetary boundaries at the Belgian level. It aimed to define what a ‘safe and just operating space within the planetary boundaries’ concretely means for Belgium. The analysis revealed that most planetary boundaries were crossed at the Belgian scale. This confirms the relevance for CERAC to focus on climate and biodiversity-related risks in their first risk assessment and underscores the importance of addressing other sectors in the future. Aurore Brunson and Tristan Carion, two experts from CERAC, will give this presentation. To put this study into perspective, two foreign experts were invited to tell their stories. Béatrice Michalland, Deputy Director of Environmental Information at the SDES (Statistical Data and Studies Department), Ministry for Ecological Transition and Territorial Cohesion. She is one of the experts responsible for the report La France face aux neuf limites planétaires, (Oct. 2023) Gerald Tessmer, Environmental Reporting Officer at the Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Agriculture, Nature and Consumer Protection of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia He was one of the authors of a study by the Global Footprint Network under the direction of Mathis Wackernagel, Ph.D. For the first time, the country's ecological footprint was surveyed and compared with that of other countries.

Remember tomb M1093 from 秦家嘴？ New article just appeared with a few more details about this tomb on https://lnkd.in/gBfMk9cc with thanks to Rens Krijgsman 武致知 for alerting me to this new article First, more information about the tomb itself. It seems that the conditions of preservation are not of the best kind; but a lot has been preserved from it nonetheless. The tomb is dated mid-Warring States, from the Chu 楚 state. As noted, it has been looted before the archeologists could get to it. But, because a lot of the material was positioned is a sort of separate chamber (to the right of the coffin), a lot has been preserved (see images #2, one of which below) Objects preserved in it are lacquer; a few metal ones; and pottery vases. The tomb occupant is said to be a common person; their remains are gone (likely because of the looting).

Available via www.mapsforeurope.org, version one of the Open Maps For Europe 2 (OME2) project prototype provides 1: 10 000 scale authoritative administrative boundary and transport data for Belgium, France and The Netherlands. It is the first dataset created using the new production process, developed by several OME2 Consortium members led by IGN - French Mapping Agency (Institut Géographique National) to deliver edge-matched official geospatial information from multiple national sources. By automating the production process, OME2 transforms EuroGeographics members’ national data to meet the specifications for high-value pan-European datasets. Members simply complete a conversion table which typically takes just a few days, significantly reducing the time and resources required. Additional work is then only needed in the rare event that the data structure changes. The process also responds to user needs by enabling annual updates. Members can re-use these techniques nationally and exchange good practices to advance the data sharing tools needed to deliver free-flowing, interoperable data for the single market. In doing so, OME2 demonstrates how demand for geospatial information in all common data spaces of the European Strategy for Data can be met. By the end of 2025, the OME2 prototype is expected to cover 10 countries with three key themes identified by users and defined as high value by the European Commission – administrative boundaries, transport and hydrography. The project, which is co-funded by the European Union, is also enhancing the five existing Open Maps For Europe datasets, including the pilot Open Cadastral Map. These maps provide a detailed picture of the noise levels from road traffic, rail traffic, industry and air traffic. 🔎 Why are these maps important? - They help the city develop an effective policy to reduce noise pollution. - They inform citizens about the noise pollution in their environment. - They form an important basis for taking concrete measures, such as installing noise barriers or introducing low-emission zones. TLDR: eigenlijk was Niels Bohr een hopeloze filosofische prutser 🤓 On the Relative Nature of Quantum Individuals | by Christian de Ronde et al. | ArXiv In this work we argue against the interpretation that underlies the "Standard" account of Quantum Mechanics (SQM) that was established during the 1930s by Niels Bohr and Paul Dirac. Ever since, following this orthodox narrative, physicists have dogmatically proclaimed -- quite regardless of the deep contradictions and problems -- that the the theory of quanta describes a microscopic realm composed of elementary particles (such as electrons, protons and neutrons) which underly our macroscopic world composed of tables, chairs and dogs. After critically addressing this atomist dogma still present today in contemporary (quantum) physics and philosophy, we present a new understanding of quantum individuals defined as the minimum set of relations within a specific degree of complexity capable to account for all relations within that same degree. Our partners Gemeente Dordrecht and imec - OnePlanet Research Center have teamed up to measure the effects of a neighbourhood renovation on climate resilience 💪 🌱 Dordrecht is taking measures to mitigate the urban heat island effect within the neighbourhood, aiming to reduce temperatures and enhance overall comfort and sustainability. OnePlanet Research Center measures the air quality (specifically: temperature, humidity and nitrogen dioxide) in the neighbourhood pre- and post-renovation using a sensor network. The sensor data is calibrated and sent to the publicly available Wielwijk dashboard, where citizen scientists can monitor the measurements in real-time. CFP : IFIP/IEEE International Conference on Very Large Scale Integration 2024, Tangier, Morocco Keynote 2 – AI at the edge: Hype or Hope? Henk Corporaal - Technical University of Eindhoven (NL) Abstract: Artificial neural networks (ANNs), especially deep ones, have gained immense popularity. While their potential applications appear boundless, a significant drawback is their heavy reliance on cloud-based servers. This dependence stems from the exponential expansion in the size and computational requirements of these networks. For instance, the latest large language models like ChatGPT-4 boast over a trillion parameters and demand astonishing computational resources, in the order of 10^25 FLOPS, for training. Achieving this training task in a reasonable timeframe (i.e., less than a month) requires the use of thousands of cloud-based servers. Even a single inference takes about 5.10^14 FLOPS, making real-time inferencing extremely costly. We believe that there are substantial advantages in bringing intelligence directly to smart sensor devices at the network edge, performing the computation locally, close to the sensing data. However, these devices typically have a sub-Watt or even sub-mWatt power budget, and lack huge memories and compute capabilities. Achieving smart Edge-AI with less reliance on large AI servers necessitates a significant improvement in energy efficiency. This leads to the question: is AI at the edge really feasible, or is it a mindless dream? In this keynote, we address the state of the art (SOTA) in Edge computing and its trends and developments. We discuss what is needed to really bring AI to the Edge, how to bridge this huge energy-efficiency gap. Improvements are needed at all levels of the design stack; perhaps even new neural computing paradigms. More than 50 years ago, Mikhail Bongard’s 1970 book Pattern Recognition introduced 100 visual concept learning problems as a challenge for artificial vision systems: identify the concept that distinguishes the set of six frames on the left from the set of six on the right. They were later featured in Douglas Hofstadter's 1979 book Gödel, Escher, Bach. Finally out in Cognitive Science: Solving Bongard problems with a visual language and pragmatic constraints with Stefan Depeweg and Frank Jäkel, based on the 2014 MSc thesis by Stefan. We extract visual features from raw pixels, translate them into a symbolic visual vocabulary, which is used by a context free grammar representing compositional visual concepts. Using this language and Bayesian inference, concepts can be induced from the six frames. We find reasonable agreement between concepts with high posterior and the solutions formulated by Bongard himself for 35 problems. While this is far from solving all BPs, it does better than previous approaches. Discussion includes why it is helpful to take pragmatic constraints into account. https://lnkd.in/gY2exiga
