It's a particularly unique opportunity for young, up-and-coming researchers! In memory of late OFE co-founder Basil Cousins, we have instituted the Basil Cousins Award, which will go to a young, promising academic researching the societal effects of open innovation and open technologies. Jérémie Haese won the 2023 Basil Cousins Award with his paper “Open at the Core: Moving from Proprietary Technology to Building a Product on Open Source Software”. The winner will be selected among the participants of the Symposium and will receive a prize of €5000. Taking place around the OSPOs for Good 2024 Symposim on July 9 & 10 -- for which OFE served on the Programme Committee -- this exciting week of activity also featured a government-focused side event, an entire day of workshops after the main event, a social event, and many other things. OpenForum Europe will be all over the OSPOs for Good 2024 conference next week on July 9 & 10 in New York City, and we will be busy the entire week around the conference too! Join us on Monday 8 July for a government-focused workshop on building open source ecosystems, which we will be co-hosting with Digital Public Goods Alliance and Eclipse Foundation, featuring speakers like Armando J. Manzueta Peña from the Dominican Republic and Leonhard Kugler from Zentrum Digitale Souveränität (ZenDiS), alongside Lea Gimpel, Lucy Harris and Enzo Ribagnac. On Tuesday 9 July, OFE Executive Director Astor Nummelin Carlberg will be opening up the main conference, and Policy Advisor Nicholas Gates will be MCing throughout both days. OFE Chair Sachiko Muto will also be moderating a panel on Wednesday 10 July on the topic of "Engaging the Open Source Community" with Arun Gupta, Hilary Carter, Omkhar Arasaratnam and Tajh Taylor. Finally, OFE has organised an Open Tech Afterwork for the conference on Tuesday, with generous support from Mozilla, Eclipse Foundation, OSB Alliance (Open Source Business Alliance - Bundesverband für digitale Souveränität e.V.), The Linux Foundation, and Sovereign Tech Fund. On Thursday, Nick will co-host a session on "Open Source Infrastructure for Social Good" at the What's Next for Open Source? Workshops with Jake Watson from Digital Impact Alliance, Jon Lloyd from the Digital Public Goods Alliance and Jacob G. of OSPO++. That workshop will feature the generous contributions of Ibrahim Bayoh, Anir Chowdhury, Adriana Groh, Ruth Ikegah, Brian Behlendorf, Robert MacTavish, Nico Lück, Fui Meng Liew, and Julia Vieira de Andrade Dias.
