Meet Dom Parker, our Junior Accessibility Consultant and accessible gaming whiz. From archery to sound design, she has a whole lot of passion.  Originally studying music with a dream of a performance career, she found her calling in accessibility through a side gig at Vision Australia. Dom was an alternative music producer, learning about how different people can read and interact with music. This sparked her passion for accessible sound design and interactive media solutions tailored for people with vision loss. Dom’s technical background in audio led her into game development. She dedicated herself to creating accessible gaming experiences through audio design, while learning how to create games in Unity and Unreal Engine. She was keen to learn, reading different gaming guidelines and resources. She also became a freelancer doing Quality Assurance and audio design for different indie games. At Intopia, Dom has found a community that values her diverse skills and encourages her growth. “Everyone is incredibly accepting, open, and willing to help you”, she shared.  Dom has enjoyed contributing to projects that use her skills like editing audio and the media for Intopia Learn’s Designing For Web Accessibility course. “Intopia is willing to help you develop the areas you’re interested in, and it’s been great to have that support”. In her latest interview in the Service NSW Accessibility Newsletter, Dom recommended ‘The Digital Accessibility Podcast’. This podcast offers valuable discussions and insights into various aspects of accessibility, making it essential listening for anyone passionate about inclusive design.  Outside her professional life, Dom practices archery, plays table-top role-playing games and fosters seeing eye puppies. If she could have a superpower, it would be talking to animals. This originated from her early childhood dream of being a Zoo Keeper. Dom’s blend of creativity, technical expertise, and a genuine commitment to accessibility makes her a valued member of the Intopia team. Hitting the bullseye isn’t just for archery - Dom applies the same precision to her work in game accessibility.  Her work ensures that whether it's through games or digital platforms, inclusivity is a key element from the start.

Edit: According to WCAG, 320 CSS pixels is equivalent to a starting viewport width of 1280 CSS pixels wide at 400% zoom.  The intent of Success Criterion 1.4.10: Reflow (Level AA) is to support people with low vision who need to enlarge text and read it in a single column. When the browser zoom is used to scale content to 400%, it reflows - i.e., it is presented in one column so that scrolling in more than one direction is not necessary. For people with low vision, both enlarging and reflowing text are critical to reading. Enlarging text enables the perception of characters. Reflowing text enables users to track from the end of one line to the beginning of the next line. Avoiding the need to scroll in the direction of reading in order to reveal lines that are cut off by the viewport is important, because such scrolling significantly increases the effort required to read. It is also important that content is not hidden off-screen. For example, zooming into a vertically scrolling page should not cause content to be hidden to one side.
