Light, SSD, SandyBridge-based alternative to MBP

It's limited to 1.8" drives as opposed to the much more common 2.5" drives available for the T410. Also, the battery options are different (though not necessarily worse). But realistically the only sacrifice you're making for the lighter weight is a bigger dent in your wallet. ;)

Is IPS still the bee’s knees?

I picked up two when they were on sale at CA$220 ($100 off) each a few days before Christmas. I was thinking the same thing, the resolution of the U2311h is identical so I'd rather have the higher pixel density. But I found the maximum brightness was disappointing, especially compared to the...

    Current state of GPU-based rendering?

Unless the CG artists are specifically asking for this, none at all. This would be a major disruption of the production pipeline. GPU renderers will require quite different trade-offs and techniques than the software renderer they're used to. Looking at the list of unimplemented features...

    Vista and CRT screen res

Not sure if this may be useful to you, but I thought I'd share it anyway. I've got two different 19" CRTs hooked up to my desktop. The primary works fine at 1600x1200 @ 75Hz but the other one could only manage an unacceptable 65Hz at that res. Anyway, I just left it at 1280x1024 until recently...

Best time to buy laptop for school in the fall 2010

Nope. There's no major changes coming from Intel or AMD until 2011. Intel's Huron River platform with Sandy Bridge CPUs is expected in the first quarter. AMD is being a little more cagey about when their Fusion processors launch, but they're due around the same timeframe. (AMD's Nile and Danube...

    Sorry. I just couldn't resist. :D

Looking for a 3D laptop... when?

I think the 'ideal situation' is where the difference of opinion comes in.:) I haven't seen a 3DS in person, so maybe my caution is unjustified. Unfortunately from the description, it sounds like the tech could be tiring on the eyes and a little un-ergonomic. I think Microsoft's eye-tracking...

Looking for a 3D laptop... when?

I agree that the current stereo 3D displays sound gimmicky. The 3DS glasses-free technology sounds completely useless for 3D modeling from the descriptions I've seen so far: http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/15/nintendo-3ds-in-the-flesh Moving your head to see around things is such an...

mxm card in a pci-e slot

And the desktop cards are probably twice the performance aswell. If you were to underclock/undervolt the desktop chip and memory down to the same levels as the mobile card, I suspect the power draw and performance would be comparable. ( Note that the mobile branding can be quite different from...

    3D modeling software

I think you can safely ignore the dithering. :D It's present on both the 'bad' Sketchup sample AND on the 'good' Dimensions sample, so it's likely an artifact of how it was screen captured/rendered. I know sketchup doesn't look that bad as I just happened to be playing with it last weekend...

    3D modeling software

Even if it can, that still won't address the silhouette edges. Since they're looking for 'nice' vector output, I suspect that's a bigger problem than the quality of the shading.

    3D modeling software

Changing the renderer is of little help when the problem with sketchup is the coarseness of the polygonal representation of curved surfaces. I think that blargh's suggestion of using the same CAD/CAM software as the clients (or a compatible one), makes the most sense.

    Rejuvenating my Thinkpad T42

Two years ago I replaced the battery in my T41p straight from Lenovo. After being tied to a power socket for a couple of months, having a working battery again was an absolute joy. Hallelujah! Now I'm up to 533 cycles on it and down to 80% design capacity. I'm definitely getting my money's worth...

Mobile workstation for 3ds max 2011

Well, workstation means you're pretty much restricted to Quadro FX or FireGL/FirePro graphics. You'll only find these in the highest-end laptops from the likes of Dell, HP and Lenovo. And while the Precision, Elitebook and Thinkpad lines are certainly good quality, they are not small, light or...

A program to force a Q6600 to lower VID?

It looks to me like Core Temp is confused by speedstep. A Q6600 has a 9x multiplier but mine shows up as a 6x multiplier in Core Temp aswell. Shows as 2.4GHz from Computer properties though. Also, those temps! Mine are fluctuating around 39'C at a rather warm 27'C ambient temperature...

Suggestions for building a GPGPU hydra?

Gigabyte introduced an X58 board with seven PCIe X16 slots a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately, from the pics, it looks like you're still limited to 4 double wide cards. :( http://techreport.com/discussions.x/18903

Ouch. My bad. Didn't realize how far ES2 went with nuking features. :(

    Learn me on GLSL

You do use those calls to manipulate the modelview matrix. Then you can access it in the shader like so: gl_Position = gl_ModelViewProjectionMatrix * gl_Vertex; Which you'll see a variant of in practically every vertex shader. Boring. ;) The interesting stuff is the extra flexibility you get...

    Vectors, Points, and Directions

For modulating RGB vectors it is. The lighting on an object is influenced by the colour of the light source and the object colour. Since most CG objects are texture mapped this modulation will happen per texel. Perhaps because of that, multiplication is component-wise in shading languages, with...

    looking for a 14" laptop with an i5 520/540

Now that you mention it, I do recall the NBR review of the T410 looked at models with and without discrete graphics: http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=5525&review=lenovo+thinkpad+t410 Both models used the i5-540m and the discrete Quadro NVS 3100m appears to be based on the same...
