Lunophone è un nuovo progetto musicale nato dalla fruttuosa collaborazione tra Dario D'Alessandro (Homunculus Res) e James Strain (Rascal Reporters). Sei composizioni di ciascun membro danno come risultato un totale di 12 canzoni che sono state suonate e arrangiate dalle rispettive località in Italia e Irlanda.
Il risultato è un'intrigante fusione di stili uniti da gusti e sentimenti comuni che portano i due musicisti a creare una miscela di jazz-rock progressivo con influenze di Canterbury/RIO e caratterizzata da forme di canzone avant-pop bizzarre ed eclettiche.

L'album sposa musica rock vivace e divertita con paesaggi sonori delicati e intricati, occasionalmente caratterizzati da elementi microtonali dovuti all'uso da parte di Strain di strumenti fretless e mediorientali. Le canzoni stesse sono lunatiche e imprevedibili, con forme interne mutevoli e strutture articolate, ulteriormente complicate dai testi ambigui scritti e cantati da D'Alessandro.

La ricchezza degli arrangiamenti e la raffinatezza melodica conferiscono alla musica una qualità densa e pulsante, con strati e sottigliezze che aspettano di essere scoperti e assaporati ad ogni ascolto.

Lunophone evoca l'idea di un suono emanato dalla Luna, ammaliante e misterioso. "Surroundings" è un album di 42 minuti, caratterizzato da un suono compatto magistralmente gestito da Strain nel mixaggio e nel mastering.

Lunophone is a new musical project born from the fruitful collaboration between Dario D'Alessandro (Homunculus Res) and James Strain (Rascal Reporters). Six compositions from each member result in a total of 12 songs which were played and arranged from their respective locations in Italy and Ireland.
The result is an intriguing fusion of styles united by common tastes and feelings that lead the two musicians to craft a blend of progressive jazz-rock with influences from Canterbury/RIO and characterised by bizarre and eclectic avant-pop song structures.

The album marries lively and fun rock music with delicate and intricate soundscapes, occasionally featuring microtonal elements due to Strain's use of fretless and Middle Eastern instruments. The songs themselves are dynamic and moody, with shifting shapes and articulated structures, further complicated by the ambiguous lyrics written and sung by D'Alessandro.

The richness of the arrangements and the melodic sophistication lend a dense and pulsating quality to the music, with layers and subtleties waiting to be discovered and savoured with each listen.

Lunophone evokes the notion of a sound emanating from the Moon, bewitching and mysterious. "Surroundings" is a 42-minute album, characterized by its compact sound masterfully handled by Strain in mixing and mastering.

The new live EP by Ryan W. Stevenson's project reminded me, that this debut album must have been gone down the wishlist... If instrumental Canterbury stuff is your thing, this should be a no-brainer. Firmly rooted in the past (late 60s, 70s), nevertheless with a fresh sound. Guests incude The Tangent's Andy Tillison and Soft Machine's Theo Travis. Carsten Pieper
