In this instalment of the Life at FT blog, we spotlight the rollout of FT’s trans inclusion policy in the US, following its first rollout in the UK. Together with the HR Team in the US and FT Proud, we discussed the importance of a workplace where employees can freely and safely be themselves, as well as the efforts in advancing social engagement, advocacy, and commemorating Trans Day of Visibility.

We have now officially introduced a trans inclusion policy at our US office, building on its earlier implementation in the UK. What do you think are the benefits of such policies?

This policy is designed to create a supportive atmosphere where employees feel safe to ask for support and be their authentic selves at work.
The implementation of gender-neutral bathrooms is a key indicator of our dedication to inclusivity, respect, and dignity of every employee. FT offices strive to offer a welcoming and safe space for all.
Furthermore, this policy acts as a foundational tool for educating our employees on how to be allies to trans individuals, catering to those who are keen to support but may not be sure on how to do so effectively.

Tell us a little about FT Proud in the US and what you do?

FT Proud here in the US has grown significantly over the past year, and provided colleagues opportunities to socialize, advocate, and engage with both our local NYC community and one another. As a FT Proud co-lead in the US, I work to make connections with my coworkers beyond the bounds of our day-to-day jobs, and organize events to both educate and enrich our office experience.

Why is trans inclusion important?

Though I feel the FT already offers a welcoming workplace for our LGBTQ+ colleagues, cementing these values through our recent Trans Inclusion Policy was a big step for us. Trans inclusion means not only offering equal and fair treatment to our trans coworkers, but working to provide them with an exemplary workplace experience where they feel empowered and protected.

Can you tell us more about how your ERG marked Trans Day of Visibility this year?

In honor of Trans Day of Visibility, the US office hosted a live interview with executive editor of Semafor, Gina Chua. As one of the most senior openly transgender journalists in the US, Gina offered unique perspectives on trans inclusion and educated us on how we can best approach trans issues from a firsthand perspective.

You spearheaded the launch of FT's first trans inclusion policy, what inspired you to?

The inspiration behind launching our company's first transgender inclusion policy was twofold. First and foremost, we wanted to ensure that all of our colleagues, including those who are transgender, feel wholly supported, respected and included in our workplace. We recognised the importance of providing a clear resource that enshrined the rights and needs of our trans employees.

Secondly, the policy was developed in response to colleagues seeking guidance on how to best support team members who were transitioning at work. We understood that the process of transitioning is deeply personal, and that individuals may need understanding and allyship from both co-workers and the organization as a whole.

Ultimately, our goal was to foster a workplace culture where every individual can bring their authentic self to work and thrive in their career, regardless of gender identity.

Proactively implementing this inclusion policy was a crucial step in creating an equitable environment for all. It was simply the right thing to do to support our trans colleagues.

FT's trans inclusion policy is a testament to our commitment to fostering a culture of respect and empowerment. This policy not only strengthens our workplace, but also ensures that all employees feel supported and valued.
