Reading program at Liberty Park Elementary helps students, interns
EDUCATORS HANDS ON EXPERIENCE IN A CLASSROOM. STUDENTS AT THE SCHOOL DISTRICT OF PALM BEACH COUNTY ARE INTERNING AT A LOCAL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TO SEE WHAT IT IS LIKE TO SHAPE THE MINDS OF THE FUTURE. AS JOSSIE CARBONARE REPORTS, THEY ARE ALREADY MAKING A HUGE IMPACT IN THE CLASSROOM. SUMMER INTERNS AT LIBERTY PARK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ARE MAKING A WORLD OF A DIFFERENCE. I LOVE THEM ALL. THESE HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS SPENDING SIX WEEKS WITH THIRD GRADERS, TEACHING THEM, READING SKILLS, HELPING TO PREPARE THEM FOR A STATE TEST KNOWN AS FAST. I’VE LEARNED A LOT. I DEFINITELY STAY LIKE I’VE GAINED, LIKE A LOT OF EXPERIENCE WITH WORKING WITH KIDS. LIKE, IT’S NOT LIKE ALL FUN AND GAMES. THERE’S A LOT TO IT, BUT IT’S ALSO LIKE IF YOU REALLY WANT IT, IT’S REWARDING, ESPECIALLY SEEING LIKE THEIR FACES EVERY DAY. MANY OF THEM SAYING THE EXPERIENCE HAS ENCOURAGED THEM TO PURSUE A CAREER IN EDUCATION, SOMETHING SCHOOL LEADERS SAY IS NEEDED. I’M GOING TO GIVE YOU AN EXAMPLE OUT LOUD. THIS IS MY 25TH YEAR IN THE DISTRICT AND OUR BIGGEST CONCERN IS THAT WE’RE HAVING A HARD TIME FINDING TEACHERS THAT TRULY LOVE THE PROFESSION. THIS PROGRAM GIVING HOPE BECAUSE A QUESTION MARK, YOU’RE ASKING A QUESTION, RIGHT? SO YEAH, CHANGE THAT ONE. WE’RE SEEING HUGE RESULTS WITH THEM WORKING WITH OUR STUDENTS ONE ON ONE. AND THE KIDS ABSOLUTELY LOVE THEM. THEY COME EVERY DAY. THEY WORK A REAL JOB. THEY COME IN, THEY PUNCH IN, THEY DO THEIR LESSON PLANS SIDE BY SIDE WITH THEIR TEACHERS. AND THEY HAVE BEEN INCREDIBLE, INCREDIBLE TEACHERS. AND THE BEST PART OF IT, WHEN I MET WITH THEM YESTERDAY, THEY ALL SAID THAT THEY WANTED TO BE TEACHERS. THOSE INTERESTED IN NEXT YEAR’S SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM APPLICATIONS WILL OPEN IN THE SPRING THROUGH THE PALM BEACH COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT’S WEBSITE. REPORTING FROM GREENACRES. I’
