Matt Hoenig

Meteorologist

Matt Hoenig is a meteorologist for the Storm Watch 9 team. He joined WMUR in July 2022.

Matt grew up in Wakefield, Massachusetts, just outside of Boston. Ever since he was in pre-school, Matt has been fascinated by New England's changing weather. Growing up, he was the go-to person for updates on the forecast at school. He routinely gave weather forecasts as part of his high school's television production program. Matt then obtained his degree in Meteorology and Atmospheric Science from Penn State University.

In 2023, Matt earned the Certified Broadcast Meteorologist seal from the American Meteorological Society. This distinction is given to meteorologists who show advanced understanding of the weather and effective communication skills.

Before coming to the Granite State, Matt kicked off his career as a meteorologist at WGME in Portland, ME. He covered a "true" blizzard, as well as numerous winter storms and severe weather events. He covered a tornado outbreak on Cape Cod when he was an intern at WCVB in Boston, WMUR's sister station.

While he grew up in Massachusetts and worked in Maine, Matt has always loved New Hampshire. He has spent a lot of time vacationing with his family at Newfound Lake and Lake Winnipesaukee. He is also an active hiker and loves climbing some of the highest peaks in the White Mountains.

Matt loves the challenge of forecasting New England's rapidly changing weather. When he is not tracking the next big storm, he is out on the hiking trails, sampling new breweries, and cheering on his favorite Boston sports teams.
