Remembrance for girl shot, killed in Silverton 1 year ago held Wednesday
An event to remember a 9-year-old girl who was shot and killed last year was held Wednesday in Silverton.
The family of Da'Myiah Barton-Pickens is still asking for justice.
Police say the girl was with friends inside a home on Plainfield Road a year ago when she was hit in the chest by a bullet.
Two men are charged in her death. A third is also charged in connection to the crime.
A group remembering the life of Barton-Pickens marched around the Hamilton County Courthouse and Justice Center Wednesday.
“It's hard to have patience like this when you're frustrated,” said Da’Myiah’s mother, Danieka Pickens.
She was among nearly 50 people who arrived on the steps of the Hamilton County Courthouse for the march.
“It just replays itself. Every day I wake up, every day I see my other children, you know, It just it just keeps repeating itself, you know? So, it's not getting easier at all,” Pickens said.
“You don’t just hurt the one person; you hurt the whole family,” said Da’Myiah’s godmother, Cayla Matthews. “You hurt the whole family, you hurt their sisters and siblings.”
Court records indicate that DeMario Williams pleaded guilty and received three and a half years in jail for his part in the shooting.
Quassem Dixon and Ryan Brown both have a hearing scheduled for July 17.
