Coroner confirms cause of death for man struck by Kings Island roller coaster
The coroner has confirmed the cause of death for the man hit by a roller coaster at Kings Island last month.
The coroner says Arntanaro Nelson, 38, of Wilmington, Ohio died on June 24 at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. Mason police identified Nelson as the victim last week.
The coroner confirmed Wednesday that Nelson's cause of death was listed as traumatic brain injury with skull fractures due to blunt impacts to the head, saying blunt impacts to the torso were also a contributing cause.
Nelson was struck by the roller coaster last Wednesday night. According to a spokesperson with Kings Island, Nelson entered a restricted, fenced area around the Banshee roller coaster around 8 p.m. The 4,124-foot-long inverted roller coaster tops out at 68 miles per hour.
The spokesperson said the guest is believed to have been struck by the ride, prompting a large response from multiple first responders.
Mason police say Nelson dropped his keys while riding the Banshee and went into a restricted area to get the keys when he was struck.
"It was very ominous, and they were like, 'Oh my God. What's happening? What happened?' The sentiment that was echoed among the people was it was such a loud noise," a ride operator at the park said.
The Banshee ride was closed while authorities and park personnel investigated the incident and has since reopened.
