High temperatures can cause damage to the inside of your car, and it’s important to ensure proper maintenance to avoid damage.
Trevor Graham, the owner and a mechanic of Graham's Auto Sales & Service in Ephrata, Lancaster County, is offering tips for drivers to protect their vehicles from the sun.
Interior
He said the easiest and most affordable way to protect your car from sun damage is by investing in car shades.
"Cover your window. Keep that inside cool," Graham said. "The sun has damaging heat. It's going to loosen up adhesives inside ... anything that is plastic inside the vehicle."
Tires
Graham said heat can also wear out tires. He said applying tire shine is a good way to protect tires from heat damage. He also recommends regularly checking tire pressure during the warmer hours of the day.
Electric Vehicles
To sustain battery life, mechanics recommend drivers charge their vehicles to 80% instead of 100% during the warmer hours of the day.
Graham also recommends drivers with EVs to set their vehicles to Eco mode.
"It reduces power slightly but lengthens the life of that battery, so you're not charging as much in these hot temperatures."
Maintenance
Regularly changing oil is important to keep in mind during the summer. Graham said a lack of oil in warmer temperatures can create problems for an engine.
Making sure filters are changed and the AC is running properly is also important to ensure a cool interior. Graham said drivers who experience issues with their AC and need a filter change should visit their local mechanic.
