Authorities identify child killed in head-on crash near Saylorville Lake
OPT IN FOR BREAKING NEWS NOTIFICATIONS. NEW TONIGHT AUTHORITIES HAVE IDENTIFIED THE CHILD KILLED IN A CRASH IN POLK COUNTY SUNDAY. THE POLK COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE IDENTIFIED THE BOY AS TEN YEAR OLD MAX AMUNDSEN. KCCI AFFILIATE JACOBSON IS IN POLK COUNTY TONIGHT WITH HOW THE COMMUNITY IS PULLING TOGETHER FOR MAX. IT’S BEEN SEVERAL DAYS SINCE TWO CARS WERE INVOLVED IN A HEAD ON CRASH HERE ON NORTHWEST FISHER LANE. THE ACCIDENT HAPPENED SUNDAY AFTERNOON NEAR SAYLORVILLE LAKE. BOTH THE DRIVER AND THE JUVENILE PASSENGER OF THE NORTHBOUND VEHICLE WERE TAKEN TO A HOSPITAL, WHERE THE CHILD DIED. THE POLK COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE IDENTIFIED THE CHILD WEDNESDAY AS TEN YEAR OLD MAX AMUNDSEN. NORTH POLK COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT SUPERINTENDENT MICHAEL KLEIN SAYS MAX WAS GOING TO BE A FOURTH GRADER THIS FALL AT BIG CREEK ELEMENTARY. IN A STATEMENT MADE TO KCCI, KLEIN GOES ON TO SAY THAT MAX WAS A COMPASSIONATE AND THOUGHTFUL YOUNG MAN WHO ALWAYS HAD A BIG SMILE ON HIS FACE. THE SUPERINTENDENT ALSO SAYS HE WAS A SHINING LIGHT IN HIS HEART, OVERFLOWED WITH KINDNESS. THE NORTH POLK ELEMENTARY PTA POSTED ON FACEBOOK TUESDAY, ASKING FOR DONATIONS TO HONOR MAX AND JUST 24 HOURS LATER, THE NORTH POLK ELEMENTARY PTA ANNOUNCED ON ITS FACEBOOK WEDNESDAY THAT THEY HAD RAISED ENOUGH MONEY TO BUILD A FEW PICNIC TABLES AND PLAQUES IN MEMORY OF MAX HERE AT BIG CREEK ELEMENTARY, THE PTA SAYS A MEMORIAL FUND HAS ALSO BEEN SET UP TO SUPPORT MAX’S FAMILY AT A LOCAL BANK. KCCI REACHED OUT TO THE PTA FOR AN INTERVIEW, BUT DID NOT HEAR BACK. THE POLK COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE SAYS THEY’RE STILL WORKING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT CAUSED THE ACCIDENT. Authorities identify child killed in head-on crash near Saylorville Lake
The Polk County Sheriff's Office has identified the child who died in a head-on crash Sunday. According to the sheriff's office, a two-vehicle crash was reported at about 1:30 p.m. Sunday on Northwest Fisher Lane, just north of the entrance to Cottonwood Recreation Area near Saylorville Lake. Each vehicle was occupied by two people. The occupants of the northbound vehicle — the driver and a juvenile passenger — were both transported to an area hospital where the child, identified Wednesday as 10-year-old Maxwell Harry Amenson of Polk City, died. In a statement made to KCCI, North Polk Community School District superintendent Michael Kline says Amenson was going to be a fourth grader this fall at Big Creek Elementary School."We were deeply saddened to receive news of the tragic death of one of our beloved students, Max Amenson, who was going to be a 4th grader this fall at Big Creek Elementary.Max was a compassionate and thoughtful young man who always had a big smile on his face. He was a shining light, especially within the walls of our school. His heart overflowed with kindness, a quality he proudly displayed at every opportunity.
