'Viva': EW review

A breakout at last year’s Telluride Film Festival, this lovely Cuban import stars Héctor Medina as Jesus, a shy young hairdresser who takes a job grooming wigs for drag queens at a dank nightclub. Jesus’ real dream is to be on the stage—until his estranged father, a hard-drinking parolee and ex-boxer, abruptly turns up, forcing him to take in a man he hardly knows. Havana’s crumbling trapped-in-time beauty also plays a starring role, but it’s Medina who provides the movie’s raw, tender heart. A–
