1. it is 34" at max stretch... so to my mind I have 2.5 feet of usable cable. (For some folks, this is not long enough)
2. It connects a USB peripheral (like an external hard drive) to a USB port.
3. One end is a standard USB end
4. One end is called a Mini USB (not to be confused with Micro USB)

It is so wonderful to have this small, light multi-purpose cable. I carry multiple external hard drives and now don't have to carry a tangle of cables for them. I love the way it stays all rolled up with just enough length that i need to connect my devices. Works great.

* Just be sure you are getting the correct connector. The Micro is smaller than the Mini. The Micro is more common for things like personal Wifi's and bluetooth headsets; the Mini is more common on portable hard drives.

I hope this helps!
Peace

UPDATE DEC 08 2010: The cable just locked open today. I've used it a grand total of 6 times, at my desk (no traveling, stored it in the case when not in use) and it's already failed. Now it's just an extremely short cable that overheats and has a bulky plastic hub at the center. My original review follows.

__Original Review Follows__
I purchased this cable to help keep my travel kit tidy. That it does. It has about the same footprint as a traditional cable, but without the tangled mess and need for wire ties/zip ties/velcro/etc. On close inspection it appears sturdy enough. The extension/retraction mechanism works well and the USB connectors work and fit my ports well. The cable itself seems quite thin and cheap though (which is typical on these retractable cables).

So far I've used this exclusively to connect external hard drives to my laptop for backing up photos, and for that it works well... to a point. My beef with this little guy is that after about 20-30 minutes of heavy use, it heats up (the retractable hub gets hot, along with the USB tips) and data transfer rates start to bog down (was getting less than 2MB/sec at it's worst - as well as creating a long delay between files when copying more than one in a single copy operation (~30 seconds, regardless of file size). So I switched it out for a nice thick, quality cable and transfers sped right back up. On a more positive note, once the cable cooled its performance returned to normal, and it's not often I will need to spend half an hour or more transferring files via USB.

So it's a mixed bag, personally I will be carrying a better cable with me as I don't want it to fail while on the road. If you're using this for a phone, MP3 player, or similar, it should work find for transferring data, but keep and eye on it's temps when charging.

I'm a sucker for any thing that connects stuff to other stuff. However, I should have read the fine print because there's no Micro USB adapter! Cmon Belkin.

However, the product comes in a tidy and useful zip up case with just about everything you might run into even if you aren't an IT professional. If you are a tinkerer or traveling; or just helping the non-tech crowd set up their router this comes in handy.

In my experience all retractable cable are a mixed bag; eventually they foul up unless you are extremely careful. I thought about putting a mini-to micro adapter but then I remembered that there are often data throughput problems (it'll charge though)

For you apple people, take the mini usb-pop a micro usb adapter on it; then pop a 30 pin male to female micro on it. Its clunky but it will charge. A micro to 30 pin does data throughput as well.

My only complaint: No Cat 3 adapters!

Size: 3-FootStyle: A/BVerified Purchase
Purchased to have an extra cable for printer, external hard drive etc. Convenient, portable, love the retractable feature - a bit short; would have preferred at least 3 feet, but doable. Used it to install wireless on my printer and have used it occasionally since then. Not very sturdy looking, but time will tell - cord is on thin side and doubt that this is shielded very well (or at all), but good enough for occasional and portable use. May be better than I think - as I said time will tell.

i made the mistake of blaming these cables when my printer failed. the problem was my power supply. after i replaced my power supply, all my problems disappeared. unfortunately, i had already thrown these perfectly good cables away. why didn't i return them ? dumba$$. i'm just lucky i didn't throw everything else away that wasn't working, like my audio sound system, printer, external hdd, ...
previously my one star review was titled "unable to recognize usb device". i would have relabeled it "user error", but in fact, my power supply was the problem.
====================================================
omg, why does it have to be this complicated ?
update:
these cables are defective. i went to the belkin website and found this:
Belkin products are made of the highest quality materials and put through rigorous quality assurance testing to meet the standards our customers deserve. To avoid the potential hazards of counterfeit products, here are some key things to look out for:

Amazon.com is one of our trusted and reputable retailers, but be sure to look out for “Ships from and sold by Amazon.com” or “Ships from and sold by Belkin” on the product page. Purchase from any other reseller and you could be getting a counterfeit.

there it is. this problem has cost me a lot of time and money. i hope this helps you avoid the same mistake.

Cumple su función, lo quería para enganchar un disco de 2.5 y funciona 100% con el. La parte retráctil va bien, pero claramente no es para usarla todos los días, la puse en una posición y ahí quedó.
