In the heart of the new millennium, worlds beyond our imagination have opened up, blurring the line between life and art. Embracing the challenges and possibilities of cyberspace, genetics, the universe, and beyond, the world of science fiction has become a porthole into the realities of tomorrow. In The Year’s Best Science Fiction Twenty-eighth Annual Collection our very best SF authors explore ideas of a new world with such compelling stories as:

“Chicken Little”: The Locus Award-winning author Cory Doctorow shows us a future where the rich keep getting richer, and intend to stay that way--no matter what.

“The Starship Mechanic”: Jay Lake and Ken Scholes join forces for a wry story that shows us that a workman is only as good as his tools—and that some of those tools are specialized for some very weird tasks indeed.

“The Night Train”: The prolific writer Lavie Tidhar brings us on a vivid, violent, and bizarre journey on The Night Train, where few of the passengers are what they appear to be, and death can strike from nowhere at any second along the way…

The thirty-three short stories in this collection imaginatively take us far across the universe, into the very core of our beings, to the realm of the gods, and the moment just after now.  Included here are the works of masters of the form and of bright new talents, including:

Nina Allan

Gardner Dozois presents his picks of the best science fiction from 2010. His review of the field notes the flood of e-books, reported by some publishers to exceed sales of paper books. Dozois remains a believer in the future of print science fiction. His review of book and printed magazine sales in 2010 offers supporting evidence. The main attraction, of course, is a set of thirty-three carefully-selected stories, each preceded by a concise, well-written introduction to the author and related work.

My five favorites are:

Robert Reed's "A History of Terraforming" follows a planetary engineer from his formative experiences in childhood through a career of increasing challenges. The journey is richer than its ending.

Ian Macleod's "Re-Crossing the Styx" introduces a future in which the wealthy can afford to prolong their lives indefinitely. With the daily help of someone they are sure they can trust.

Joe Haldeman's "Sleeping Dogs" follows a war veteran returning to a far-away battlefield to uncover a truth no longer available in his memory. Can this piece of the past be allowed into his present?

Yoon Ha Lee's "Flower, Mercy, Needle, Chain" gets my vote for the best story in the collection. A woman guards an ancient weapon that can remove pieces of the past. Large pieces. The dialogue between the two main characters is reminiscent of the book-long bar discussion in
The January Dancer .

Pat Cadigan's "The Taste of Night" reminds us that the remaining senses sharpen to compensate when one sense is lost. How might this work when a new sense is emerging?

This collection is recommended. All of the stories are clearly science fiction, although they cover a lot of ground from traditional space opera to the future of an alternate history. Only a couple of them are overly preachy about current social issues. Fewer than usual--just three--also appear in David Hartwell and Kathryn Cramer's
Year's Best SF 16 . The investment of your money and time is well-returned. Enjoy!

I am only reading the 9th short story and am very pleased so far. I wanted to write the review right away so other sci-fi lovers would also enjoy the 28th collection. The stories so far have been great, mindboggling and interesting. I can't wait to read the other stories. I have read and own 27 editions (the 1st one was to expensive to purchase but I have read the stories elsewhere). I cannot say which one is my favorite since all of them have stories that I have enjoyed reading and I hope to read them again in my old age. This last one keeps up with the promise of intrigue and fun to read. Gardner Dozois's summation is always a pleasure to read and catch up with the sci-fi world at one time. He has done a great job in the selection of the stories so far and I cannot wait to read the others. I wish he would change the photo of himself since it seems to be the only one in existence. I can only highly recommend this collection. It has prompted me to write my 1st review ever. Thank you Amazon for sending me this book as soon as it came out in PB. I ordered it in January so I would not forget about it. Thanks for doing a great job.

There are more than 30 science fiction stories in this anthology of 2010 sci-fi tales, which is edited by Gardner Dozois. I enjoyed nearly all of them. A few just didn't strike me as that interesting, but they all struck me as quite well written. There is a wide range of subjects across these stories, from tales of AI's to post-humans to adventure stories to thrillers, stories of political intrigue, technological wonders and technological failures, hard science stories and sociological/anthropological stories. Whatever kind of sci-fi you like, you'll find some of it here. I'd say I liked 75% of the stories in this 650-page anthology, which made it, at fifteen bucks, a fantastic value. These days I read only novels from authors I'm sure I'll like, and anthologies. Why shell out fifteen bucks for a 70,000-word book that might well disappoint, when the same amount will buy 300,000 words that mostly rock? An added bonus is, if you like stories here, you can see if those authors have books out, and read those. This is how I find new authors to try. This collection is a great value, I highly recommend it.

So far I have loved all of these anthologies, and frequently seek out several authors' works because I liked their short stories.

4.0 out of 5 stars The usual very high standards are maintained

Firstly let me point out that this book is also available as  The Mammoth Book of Best New SF 24 (Mammoth Books)  at half the price. The "Mammoth" series lags 4 editions behind the "Year's Best SF" series hence the former is 24 and the latter (this review) is 28. The content is the same. The Year's Best covers are better and the book is bigger but thinner. You pays your money, you takes your choice. Just don't buy them both (as I did a few years ago).

As usual the standard of stories in the collection is generally very high. Of the 33 stories I scored (yes I need to get out more I know) 3 as a '2', 3 as a '3', 23 as a '4' and 4 as a '5' out of 5. All very subjective of course, but the stories that get the full 5 stars are by Steven Popkes (about a boy and a talking elephant in a dystopian future US), Damien Broderick (a moving homage to J. G. Ballard), Naomi Noivk (a moving tale of interference in an alien culture, reminiscent of
The Left Hand of Darkness  by Ursula K LeGuin) and, my favourite story in the collection by Jim Hawkins (an English refugee in a future Africa - a wonderful blend of cultures and technologies, vividly told).

There are lots of other excellent stories with just half a dozen that failed to capture my imagination. An annual treat, it remains the SF short story collection to buy.
