Well I've played Castle Clash for about a year now, and I must say it's the only free to play app that I've really grown to be addicted to.
IGG isn't one of those companies that just create a crappy game with the bare minimum and then collect profits, they actively improve this game as well as fix bugs and add new features! There have even been holidays and special maintenance days where they were only offline for an hour, but still gave all players 1,000 free gems! I know "pay to play" is controversial, but I would say this game is one of those exceptions where you can have a lot of fun and earn gems without paying for anything.
The gem-earning opportunities are vast, there are many achievements, log-in rewards, and activities that will grant you free gems. Of course you'll run into players with all legendary heroes that obviously bought their way to success, but there are so many levels that you're going to run into better players anyway so why not just have fun?
The castle building is fantastic. You can customize your castle with decorations, strategically design the walls and layout, and upgrade as you go. There really is a good strategy built into the castle design, as you can choose a defensive posture, or guide your enemy right into your trap!
The quests, expeditions, and other side-missions are unique and provide hours of fun. The only thing that is lacking is the Guild system. There isn't much opportunity to communicate with other players unless they happen to be online at the exact same time; however, I feel like IGG recognizes this and will eventually add it in as they have with every other problem I've noticed in the year I've been playing.
Overall I can't recommend this enough, it's tons of fun and is always improving!

The in app purchases are very misleading with hidden rules, you don't get what you think you pay for. After contacting them they were not professional and refused to right their wrongs. For example, in the picture attached, you have to make separate purchased over multiple days to complete the bingo. They refused a refund or the stamps for bingo.
