The book marks a watershed moment in the Big Data zeitgeist. Much of the business literature on the topic to this point has been more evangelical, telling us how analytics and Big Data will make us all taller, smarter, and more handsome. But the general sense for me has been of stories that are "way out there" for most organizations. This latest book is much more about how to realize these visions with tactical, practical prescriptions across a range of dimensions.

Perhaps the most important of these is having a clear idea of the challenges or opportunities for which Big Data might be part of the solution. In Chapter Two, Davenport presents a very helpful series of use cases for using Big Data in several industry applications, including business travel, energy management, retail, and home education. He pushes further to examine the relative readiness of a number of different industries and business functions, including marketing and sales. In Chapter Three he builds on these examples and sector assessments to offer a framework for shaping business strategies that leverage Big Data. He suggests cost reduction, time reduction, new offerings, and decision support as broad objectives for focusing Big Data initiatives, and then further suggests a useful distinction between discovery-oriented application of Big Data (say, for sorting out emergent patterns of behavior to address) and production-oriented usage (applying Big Data to personalize experiences based on which emergent patterns might be worth the effort).

This "ends" focused approach to applying Big Data, in contrast to an "If I build it (my giant Hadoop Cluster, etc.) they will come" is an extremely valuable perspective to have introduced at this point in the evolution of this trend, and Davenport has wrapped it in a clean, well-organized package of specific advice executives interested in this space can profit from.

Big data. What is it and why the heck do we keep hearing people talk about it? Hasn't it been around for years and years? Haven't we always looked at data? Yes..and no. In Big Data at Work author Tom Davenport, expert in analytics, shares with us that at one time he too thought big data was just a retread of old information. But then he started looking into it and he discovered...big data is new. In this book Davenport tells us in a concise, nonsense, and nontechnical way of what big data is and why it should matter to us.

Davenport starts us at the very beginning of explaining in simple, easy to understand terms and illustrations as to what big data is and why it's different from regular analytics. Big data, as Davenport explains, consists of unstructured data--such as comments on a feedback form; is made up of 100 terabytes or more of information; and that it is a continuous flow of data, it doesn't stop just because a survey ends. Davenport clearly explains to us that not everyone will need big data or people to analyze it, but walks us through the different aspects that might be of interest to us, why it matters, and how we can go about implementing it in our own businesses. He shares with us how companies the size of Netflix and Google are using big data to help change their approach at how they interact with their users, but even more importantly he shares with us how startups are utilizing big data to get ahead of their peers.

Even more importantly for me, Davenport explains to readers about how to get people on board with wanting to examine big data and how to build a strategy and framework into implementing it. I say it's the most important for me, because so many authors put out pie in the sky dreams or hopes, or suggest things that are only practical for businesses the size of Google. Davenport instead talks about how to do this on a practical small scale and gives us examples of how it has worked for different groups already in existence.

For anyone that is interested in the study of data, whether big or small, and how you can utilize it in your place of work, this is a must have book. Davenport's clear and concise terminology will help you understand it and explain it to others that you work with, even if they think that data crunching is looking at 2 spreadsheets at a time. I give this book 4 out of 5 stars and it will definitely have a place on my book shelf.

I have been hearing "big data" for years. Finally decided to try to understand what it is. IT is not my field. Davenport gives a good introduction to what big data is and how early adopters are using and benefitting from it. A lot of it is over my head, but even as a novice I feel the book gives me a starting point in the conversation about this important development. Good book.

Post Read Quick Review:

Because this is geared towards executives rather than day-to-day practitioners, the language and depth are a bit shallow. We do not go under the hood and discuss the exact functioning of MR and Hadoop, popular algorithms and analytic procedures, or exact mechanics behind machine learning. What you do get is a lot of anecdotal examples (very close to what other books would structural as case studies) around a set of topics in big data and executes rather well for a novice into ease into the domain. There are many books like this but what separates this one is that it is actually an enjoyable experience. The author is a seasoned writer and knows the subtle intangible to keep people engaged and wanted to get to the next paragraph. Thomas Davenport has been an executive level thought leader on big data for some time and it really comes through. He is able to share his experience working and learning from heads of many institutions and improve the famarility of the most cultural endowed with big data,

This book? I recommend.
