The classic sitcom Happy Days premiered 50 years ago, and still holds a place in our hearts for its sweet look at growing up in postwar America. Did Fonzie reshape pop culture with his innate sense of cool and many catchphrases? As the leather-jacketed icon himself would say, correctamundo. Test your knowledge of the comedy that, as the theme song says, had us feeling so right, it can’t be wrong, rockin’ and rollin’ all week long.

What was “the Fonz’s” first name?

Henry Winkler became an instant star when he first appeared as Arthur “the Fonz” Fonzarelli, a high school dropout who befriends Richie Cunningham and becomes an older-brother figure. Fonzie wore a windbreaker in early episodes, but soon switched to a classic brown leather jacket that became so famous that Winkler donated one to the Smithsonian in 1980.

Question 2 of 10

True or false: The first season of the show featured three Cunningham kids in the family.

Richie and Joanie’s older brother, Chuck, was a basketball-playing college student who appeared in only 11 episodes — and was never mentioned after the second season. He was mostly played by Gavan O’Herlihy, who portrayed villains in Superman III and the 1983 James Bond film Never Say Never Again.

Question 3 of 10

What’s the name of the diner where Richie and his friends would hang out?

Arnold, who was played by future Karate Kid star Pat Morita, turned over ownership of the popular drive-in hangout to Al Delvecchio (played by Al Molinaro).

Question 4 of 10

Richie’s good buddy Warren Weber is known by what nickname?

Anson Williams played the gullible, socially awkward Potsie for the entire 11-season run of the show, and even married the actress (Lorrie Mahaffey) who played his character’s college sweetheart. The two sang a duet together during a “pinning” ceremony. (The couple divorced in 1986 after six years of marriage.) In 2022, Williams lost a bid to become mayor of Ojai, California, by 42 votes.

Question 5 of 10

Who played Richie and Potsie’s redheaded pal Ralph Malph?

Most also tried to launch a music career, releasing a single, “All Roads (Lead Back to You),” that he sang on an episode of Happy Days in 1976. Despite the publicity, the song only reached No. 97 on the Billboard charts.

Question 6 of 10

What high school do Richie, Potsie and Ralph attend?

Westdale is the name of the high school on The Brady Bunch; the kids on Welcome Back, Kotter attended Buchanan High; and the singing and dancing teens in Grease all went to Rydell.

Question 7 of 10

What kind of store did Howard Cunningham run?

Tom Bosley, who won a Tony Award in 1960 originating the role of NYC Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia in the musical Fiorello! earned an Emmy nomination playing Mr. C in Happy Days. He went on to play Sheriff Amos Tupper in Murder, She Wrote and starred as a crime-solving priest on three seasons of Father Dowling Mysteries.

Question 8 of 10

True or false: Fonzie’s younger cousin, Chachi, always wore a red bandanna around his forehead.

Chachi (Scott Baio) wore the bandanna around his thigh. And while the sartorial choice never caught on the way Fonzie’s leather jacket did, Chachi became a beloved character (and teen idol) who sparked a longtime romance with Richie’s younger sister, Joanie. Baio and Erin Moran later starred in a short-lived spin-off series, Joanie Loves Chachi, which was canceled in 1983 after 17 episodes.

Question 9 of 10

What nickname does Fonzie give to Joanie Cunningham?

Erin Moran had appeared in a number of TV shows before she was cast as Joanie at age 13. Her real-life older brother, Tony Moran, played the masked killer Michael Myers in the 1978 horror classic Halloween.

Question 10 of 10

In a notorious 1977 episode, what stunt does Fonzie perform?

In a three-episode arc that kicked off the show’s seventh season, the Fonz heads to Hollywood for screen tests and engages in a waterskiing challenge with a local that culminates in a shark jump. Later, radio personality Jon Hein coined the term “jump the shark” to describe the moment when a popular TV show begins its downward spiral. Nonetheless, Happy Days ran for six more seasons.
