Henry Winkler became an instant star when he first appeared as Arthur “the Fonz” Fonzarelli, a high school dropout who befriends Richie Cunningham and becomes an older-brother figure. Fonzie wore a windbreaker in early episodes, but soon switched to a classic brown leather jacket that became so famous that Winkler donated one to the Smithsonian in 1980.

Later, radio personality Jon Hein coined the term “jump the shark” to describe the moment when a popular TV show begins its downward spiral. Nonetheless, Happy Days ran for six more seasons.
