KATV: Arkansas girl recovering after brown recluse bite
A 7-year-old girl is recovering after being bitten by a brown recluse spider, according to KATV, the ABC affiliate in Little Rock. Warning: The video above includes photos showing the effects of a spider bite on the skin.
Ryen Jayne Henson's mom noticed what looked like a mole on her shoulder. The girl soon began to run a fever and experience severe pain.
A doctor sent Ryen Jayne home with Motrin, but she continued to get worse.
"She was continuing to throw up and complain about the pain, her color started to change, and I thought this is not right," said Ryen Jayne's mom.
They got a second opinion and were sent to Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock.
After two blood transfusions, she was ready to be discharged from the hospital.
"If she doesn’t have a platelet transfusion, the outcome is not good," said Brandon Henson, Ryen Jayne's father. "That was pretty scary. I guess words can’t explain it.”
The University of Arkansas' Division of Agriculture Research and Extension has published a guide on how to recognize brown recluse spiders.
They are about 1/4 to 1/2 inch long, with a leg span about the size of a half dollar.
They are yellowish town to brown with no obvious pattern. The base of their legs are yellow-orange in color.
Brown recluse spiders aren't usually aggressive and retreat when they feal threatened. They aren't strong enough to bite through clothing. Most bites happen when someone is putting on clothes or rolling over in a bed that has the spiders in it.
