TAIPEI -- TSMC Chairman Mark Liu will retire next year after steering the world's largest chipmaker during a time of escalating China-U.S. tensions and into a new era of aggressive overseas expansions in Germany, Japan and the U.S.

Liu, who joined TSMC in 1993, has served as chairman since founder Morris Chang's retirement in June 2018, becoming the public face of the company during that time.
